## Abstract

A magnetic heat sink device and a heat removal method employs a heat sink device comprising a base assembly and a handle which extends in upright fashion from the base assembly. The base assembly has an array of fins. Magnets are received in holders of the base assembly and are magnetically bondable to an underlying metal attachment member so that the array of fins is in thermal communication with the member. Heat in the vicinity of the member is conducted to the fins and dissipated from the fins into the ambient environment.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A magnetic heat sink device having a longitudinal axis comprising:
a base assembly comprising a plurality of magnets, a base having a periphery disposed radially outwardly from the longitudinal axis and defining a plurality of holders sized to receive said magnets disposed adjacent said periphery, and a baseplate having a bottom surface disposed axially proximate a said magnet, wherein said bottom surface defines a plane oriented generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and an array of fins in thermal communication with said base, so that heat applied to said base is conducted to said fins and dissipated therefrom into the ambient environment; and
a handle extending in upright fashion from said base.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 1 wherein said base assembly is generally symmetric about the longitudinal axis and said handle extends from said base assembly in a direction generally parallel with the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 1 wherein said array of fins is generally symmetric about the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 3 wherein said handle is coaxial with the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 1 wherein said base is generally cylindrical and has a plurality of resilient arms defining a handle retention pocket coaxial with the longitudinal axis, said holders are generally cylindrical sockets having an axial socket wall which projects upwardly from said base, said socket wall is castellated, and a plurality of inserts are configured to engage an interior surface of said socket such that each of said magnets is contained intermediate a said socket and a said insert.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 1 wherein said array of fins comprises a first set of fins and an alternating second set of fins.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 6 wherein said first set of fins comprises a plurality of identical equiangularly spaced fins which project radially beyond a periphery of said interrupted annular portion, and an annular portion projecting radially away from and flaring slightly angularly away from a periphery of said baseplate, said annular portion interrupted by a portion of said first set of fins generally contiguous with said baseplate.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 7 wherein said first set of fins taper from a bottom portion to an upper portion generally convergent toward said handle, wherein said annular portion is interrupted by said bottom portion of said first set of fins, and said bottom portion is radially inwardly contiguous with said baseplate periphery.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 6 wherein said second set of fins comprises a plurality of identical equiangularly spaced fins having a smaller surface area than said first set of fins.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 9 wherein said array of fins includes an annular shoulder sized and configured to envelop said holders and said magnets, and said second set of fins project radially from said annular shoulder to a radial periphery of said interrupted annular portion and axially from said interrupted annular portion to an upper fin shoulder contiguous with said annular shoulder.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 1 wherein said array of fins is composed of heat conductive plastic material.

### Claim 12

A magnetic heat sink device for removing heat from a metal member and having a longitudinal axis comprising:
a base assembly comprising:
a base having a periphery disposed radially outwardly from said longitudinal axis, a plurality of holders defined adjacent said periphery, and a base plate defining a plane oriented generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis,

a handle extending in upright fashion relative to said base assembly.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 12 wherein said base is generally symmetric about the longitudinal axis and said handle extends from said base in a direction generally parallel with the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The magnetic heat sink device of claim 12 wherein said array of fins is generally symmetric about the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)
