## Abstract

A system for remotely generating sound from a musical instrument. In one embodiment, the system includes an input configured to receive a signal representative of the sound of a first musical instrument, an exciter for converting the signal to mechanical vibrations, and a coupling interface for coupling the mechanical vibrations into a second musical instrument.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system comprising:
an input configured to receive an externally generated signal from an electric musical instrument;
at least one exciter configured to convert the signal to mechanical vibrations;
at least one coupling interface configured to couple the mechanical vibrations to an acoustic instrument; and
a removable attachment means for securing at least the at least one coupling interface to the acoustic instrument.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 wherein the removable attachment means includes a cam for exerting pressure on an element of the acoustic instrument.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 further comprising a microphone.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 wherein the system is housed in a single structure.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 wherein the coupling interface is configured to apply pressure to a saddle of the acoustic instrument when the system is secured to the acoustic instrument.

### Claim 6

A system comprising:
an input configured to receive an externally generated signal representative of sound;
at least one exciter configured to convert an electrical signal to mechanical vibrations;
at least one coupling interface configured to couple the mechanical vibrations to an acoustic instrument such that the acoustic instrument generates audible sounds in response to the mechanical vibrations; and
a calibration system configured to measure an output response of the acoustic instrument, compare the output response to a target response, generate an error signal, and modify the externally generated signal based on the error signal.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The system of claim 5 wherein the calibration system includes a mechanical or acoustic transducer to measure the output response of the acoustic instrument.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

The system of claim 5 wherein the calibration system includes a digital signal processor.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7 wherein the digital signal processor is configured to generate a calibration signal for application to the exciter, receive a first feedback signal representing the audible sounds, compare the first feedback signal to an expected response, and generate a corrective transfer function such that a modification of the calibration signal by the corrective transfer function results in a second feedback signal representing the audible sounds which more closely matches the expected response than the first feedback signal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The system of claim 9 wherein the externally generated signal is sent to a processing circuit which modifies the externally generated signal by the corrective transfer function.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10 further comprising a first feedback path which is compared to a mechanical transfer function to generate a first error signal and a second feedback path which is compared to an acoustic transfer function to generate a second error signal, wherein the first error signal and the second error signal are analyzed by the digital signal processor to create the corrective transfer function.

### Claim 12

A system comprising:
an input configured to receive an externally generated signal from an electric musical instrument;
at least one exciter configured to convert the signal to mechanical vibrations, wherein the at least one exciter is an electromechanical transducer having a substantially linear shape, including a width and a length, and wherein the length is at least twice the width, and wherein the transducer is configured to be installed to an interior surface of a sound board of an acoustic guitar, such that an electrical signal applied to the electromechanical transducer causes the electromechanical transducer to exert a force on the sound board.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12 configured such that the application of a changing voltage to the electromechanical transducer produces mechanical vibration in the sound board.
