## Abstract

On a mobile electronic device, a user may manually or automatically select between a first user interface configured to persons having a left dominant hand (or simply operating the device with the left hand), and a second user interface configured to persons having a right dominant hand (or simply operating the device with the right hand).

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for operating a mobile electronic device (“MED”), the MED having a screen display, the method comprising the steps of:
providing a first user interface that is arranged for a right-hand dominant and/or right hand operating user,
providing a second user interface that is arranged for a left-hand dominant and/or left hand operating user,
providing a selector for selecting between said first and second interfaces, and
displaying on said screen display the user interface selected by said selector.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said selector is selected by a user operating the MED.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said selector is a hardware switch.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said selector is a software button.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said first user interface located more commonly-used buttons on the left side of said screen display.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said first user interface located more commonly-used buttons on the left side of said screen display.

### Claim 7

A method for operating a mobile electronic device (“MED”), the MED having a screen display, the method comprising the steps of:
providing a first user interface that is arranged for a right-hand dominant and/or right hand operating user,
providing a second user interface that is arranged for a left-hand dominant and/or left hand operating user,
providing a presently operating hand detector that determines whether a user has a dominant left hand (or presently operating the device in the left hand) or a dominant right hand (or presently operating the device in the right hand),
selecting between said first and second interfaces based on information from said presently operating hand detector, and
displaying on said screen display the user interface selected by said selector.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said selecting and displaying steps are performed automatically by software running on the MED.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses an accelerometer.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses a gravitometer.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses a gyroscope.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses a camera.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses finger location to determine a user's dominant hand.

### Claim 14 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector measures which corner of the MED is closest to the ground in determining the user's presently operating hand.

### Claim 15 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses relative button push location to determine the user's presently operating hand.

### Claim 16 (depends on 7)

A method as recited in claim 7 wherein said presently operating hand detector uses finger location to determine the user's dominant and/or presently operating hand.

### Claim 17

A method for operating a mobile electronic device (“MED”), the MED having a screen display, the method comprising the steps of:
(i) providing a first user interface that is arranged for a right-hand operating user,
(ii) providing a second user interface that is arranged for a left-hand operating user,
(iii) dynamically determining whether a user is using the MED with his/her left hand or right hand,
(iv) selecting between said first and second interfaces based on which hand the user is using,
(v) displaying on said screen display the user interface selected by said selecting step,
(vi) determining when the user moves the MED to his/her other hand, and
(vii) repeating steps (iv) and (v);
wherein said steps (iii) through (vii) may be performed automatically by software running on the MED.
