## Abstract

Provided is a system and method for providing removable data storage elements as a cloud based storage system. More specifically, the method achieves this for at least one embodiment by receiving at least one generally random stream of data objects, each data object having at least one identifiable element. The method directs the selection of at least a first identifiable element. The method then orders the stream of data objects against the first identifiable element and disposes the data objects upon at least one of the removable data storage elements in accordance with the ordered stream of data objects. A system for performing the method is also disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of providing removable data storage elements transparently as cloud based storage system, the method comprising:
receiving at least one generally random stream of data objects, each data object having at least one identifiable element;
selecting at least a first identifiable element;
ordering the stream of data objects against the first identifiable element; and
disposing the data objects upon at least one of the removable data storage elements in accordance with the ordered stream of data objects.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the ordering is performed at least in part by a first system.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the ordering is performed at least in part by a removable media library.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one identifiable element is selected from a group comprising: directory path, size value, user name, date, age, file type, hash value, source.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the received data objects are disposed upon the removable storage media in a plurality of different organizations so as to permit a variety of different response options to future user requests.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the removable data storage elements are structured and arranged for linear data access, the ordered stream of data objects imposed by the ordering transparently adapting the generally random stream of data objects to at least one linear stream for deposition upon the removable data storage elements.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein disposing the data objects is performed upon a plurality of data storage elements essentially contemporaneously, each data storage element receiving a different subset of the data objects based upon the ordered stream of data objects.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one generally random stream provides first metadata associated with a first stream of user data, a second metadata associated with a second stream of user data, and a third metadata associated with a third stream of user data, the selected first element common to the first stream of user data and the third stream of user data, a selected second identifiable element common to the second stream of user data and uncommon to the first and third streams of user data, ordering the first and third streams of user data based on the first identifiable element for disposing on at least a first data storage element, and ordering the second stream of user data based on the second identifiable element for disposing on at least one second data storage element that is in a different group from the first identifiable element.

### Claim 9

A method comprising:
receiving first metadata associated with a first stream of user data, a second metadata associated with a second stream of user data, and a third metadata associated with a third stream of user data;
grouping the first and the third metadata based on at least one common parameter; and
storing the first stream of user data and the third stream of user data on at least one first removable data storage element designated for the common parameter.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the first stream is a first data block and the third stream is a third data block.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the first stream is a first data file and the third stream is a third data file.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the second metadata is not grouped with the first and the third metadata based on the second metadata not possessing the common parameter; storing the second stream of data on a second removable data storage element that is independent of the at least one first removable data storage element designated for the common parameter.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, further including receiving the common parameter for the grouping from a user of data.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein after receiving the first metadata, the second metadata and the third metadata, transmitting a request to receive in the order the first stream of data followed by the third stream of data followed by the second stream of data.

### Claim 15 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein:
the first, the second and the third streams of data are received with the first, the second and the third identifying elements; and
the first, the second and the third streams of data are held in a buffer storage and reordered for storing the first stream of user data and the third stream of user data on the at least one first removable data storage element designated for the common parameter, and for storing the second stream of data on a second removable data storage element that is independent of the at least one first removable data storage element designated for the common parameter wherein the second identifying element is not grouped with the first and the third identifying elements based on non-commonality with the common parameter.

### Claim 16 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the common parameter is from a group comprising: directory path, size value, user name, date, age, file type, hash value, source.

### Claim 17 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one removable data storage element is a tape cartridge.

### Claim 18

A removable media storage system for a cloud environment, comprising:
a removable media library having a plurality of removable data storage elements structured and arranged for linear data access;
a receiver structured and arranged to receive a request to store a generally random collection of data objects, each data object having at least one identifiable element;
a orderer structured and arranged to organize a generally random collection of data objects based on at least one first identifiable element; and
a director structured and arranged to direct linear data storage of the organized data objects upon the removable media data storage elements, the director further structured and arranged to retrieve a previously stored data object from a removable data storage element in response to a user request.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The system of claim 18, wherein the orderer, receiver and director are component elements of a computer system with at least one processor adapted to direct the operation of the removable media library and respond to write and read requests from a plurality of users.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The system of claim 18, wherein the random collection of data objects is provided as a stream to the orderer.
