## Abstract

There is disclosed a method and device for operating an image database shared by a plurality of users. In an embodiment, each image captured by a user and stored in a shared image database is associating with the geographic coordinates of the location at which the image was captured. A search engine for the image database is configured to accept geographic coordinates as a search criterion for locating at least one captured image stored in the shared image database. The images having location coordinates within a predefined range of geographic coordinates is displayed to the user.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A computer-implemented method executed on a computing device, the method comprising:
displaying a map on a user interface;
receiving a user selection of a point on the map displayed on the user interface;
causing a search of an external image database for one or more images within a range of the point on the map; and
displaying the one or more images from the search.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:
determining geographic coordinates the user selection; and
performing the search based on the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The computer-implemented method of claim 2 wherein performing the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises searching for one or more images near the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The computer-implemented method of claim 2 wherein performing the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises searching for one or more images within a predetermined range of the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein the computing device is a wireless communications device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising determining a name of a location corresponding to the point on the map and wherein the search is performed based on the name of the location.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein receiving the user selection comprises navigating to the point on the map using navigation keys and selecting the point using a selection key.

### Claim 8

A computing device for searching an external image database, the computing device comprising:
a user interface comprising a display for displaying a map;
the user interface enabling user selection of a point on the map;
a processor for causing a radiofrequency transceiver to cause a search of the external image database for one or more images within a range of the point on the map; and
wherein the display further displays an image from the search.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the processor is further configured to:
determine geographic coordinates for the point on the map; and
cause the search to be based on the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The device of claim 9 wherein the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises searching for one or more images near the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The device of claim 9 wherein the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises searching for one or more images within a predetermined range of the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the computing device is a wireless communications device.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the processor is configured to determine a name of a location corresponding to the point on the map and to cause the search to be performed based on the name of the location.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 comprising navigation keys for navigating to the point on the map using and a selection key for selecting the point.

### Claim 15

A computer-readable medium comprising instructions in code which when loaded in memory and executed by a processor of a computing device cause the device to:
display a map on a user interface;
receive a user selection of a point on the map displayed on the user interface;
cause a search of an external image database for one or more images within a range of the point on the map; and
display the one or more images from the search.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 further comprising code that causes the device to:
determine geographic coordinates the user selection; and
perform the search based on the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The computer-readable medium of claim 16 wherein the code that causes the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises code that causes searching for one or more images near the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The computer-readable medium of claim 16 wherein the code that causes the search based on the geographic coordinates comprises code that causes searching for one or more images within a predetermined range of the geographic coordinates.

### Claim 19 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 wherein the computing device is a wireless communications device.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 further comprising code for determining a name of a location corresponding to the point on the map and wherein the search is performed based on the name of the location.

### Claim 21 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 wherein the code to receive the user selection comprises code for navigating to the point on the map using navigation keys and selecting the point using a selection key.
