## Abstract

The present invention relates to mosaic implant (15) comprising a plurality of mosaic plates (17) connected by a wire or mesh anchoring arrangement (9). Methods for forming such implants and methods for using said implants for correction of bone and soft tissue defects are described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

Mosaic implant comprising a plurality of biocompatible mosaic plates of thickness d connected by an anchoring arrangement.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

Mosaic implant according to claim 1 wherein at least two neighbouring mosaic plates are separated by a gap of width t.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

Mosaic implant according to claim 1 wherein at least two neighbouring mosaic plates are joined together by a skin which has a thickness s which is less than thickness d.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

Mosaic implant according to claim 1 wherein each mosaic plate has a maximum width w which is between 2 and 20 millimetres.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

Mosaic implant according to claim 4 wherein thickness d is between 10% and 150% of w.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

Method of forming a mosaic implant according to claim 1, wherein the method comprises the steps of moulding a cement composition around a wire or mesh and subsequently allowing said cement composition to cure.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

Method according to claim 6 comprising the steps of:
a) providing a mould with a plurality of cavities of depth d, each of which has the shape of a mosaic plate, wherein each cavity has a closable bottom end and is open at the opposite end to allow filling of the cavity, wherein each wall between adjacent cavities is pierced by at least one narrow, wire- or mesh-retaining channel of width ww;
b) placing a wire or mesh in each wire retaining channel,
c) filling said mould with a cement composition, and
d) allowing said cement to harden.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

Method according to claim 6 comprising the steps of:
i) providing a first mould half with a plurality of cavities of depth d1, each of which has the shape of a mosaic plate, wherein each cavity has a closable bottom end and is open at the opposite end to allow filling of the cavity,
ii) filling said first mould half with an excess of cement composition;
iii) placing a wire or mesh over the open ends of said cavities;
iv) placing a second mould half which has cavities of depth d2 arranged as a mirror-image of the first mould half on top of the wire or mesh and compressing it towards the first mould half; and
v) allowing said cement to harden.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

Method according to claim 6 wherein the cement composition is a non-aqueous hydraulic cement composition.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

Method according to claim 6 wherein the step of allowing said cement to harden takes place in a wet environment.

### Claim 11 (depends on 6)

Method according to claim 6 wherein the step of allowing said cement to harden takes place in a moist environment.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

Method of implanting a mosaic implant in accordance with claim 1 in a patient, comprising the steps of:
i) exposing at least some of the tissue of the patient surrounding the area where the implant is to be placed,
ii) forming the implant to the desired shape,
iii) attaching the implant to tissue, and
iv) closing the exposure.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

Method according to claim 12 wherein the step of attaching the implant to the tissue is achieved by using sutures and/or clamps and/or screws and/or plates with screws.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

Mosaic implant according to claim 1 wherein the biocompatible mosaic plates are formed of a hydraulic cement composition.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

Mosaic implant according to claim 14 wherein the cement composition comprises Monetite.

### Claim 16 (depends on 4)

Mosaic implant according to claim 4 wherein each mosaic plate has a maximum width w between 3 and 15 mm.

### Claim 17 (depends on 4)

Mosaic implant according to claim 4 wherein each mosaic plate has a maximum width w between 4 and 10 mm.

### Claim 18 (depends on 5)

Mosaic implant according to claim 5 wherein thickness d is between 20% and 130% of w.

### Claim 19 (depends on 5)

Mosaic implant according to claim 5 wherein thickness d is between 50% and 130% of w.

### Claim 20 (depends on 1)

Mosaic implant according to claim 1 wherein each mosaic plate has a maximum width w between 2 and 20 millimetres and thickness d between 50% and 130% of w.
