## Abstract

A tack device for holding plaque against blood vessel walls in treating atherosclerotic occlusive disease can be formed as a thin, annular band of durable, flexible material. The tack device may also have a plurality of barbs or anchoring points on its outer annular periphery. The annular band can have a length in the axial direction of the blood vessel walls that is about equal to or less than its diameter as installed in the blood vessel. A preferred method is to perform angioplasty with a drug eluting balloon as a first step, and if there is any dissection to the blood vessel caused by the balloon angioplasty, one or more tack devices may be installed to tack down the dissected area of the blood vessel surface.

## Claims

### Claim 1

(canceled)

### Claim 2

A method of further treating atherosclerotic occlusive disease in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty, comprising:
advancing a plurality of tacks in a compressed state to a plaque dissection at a treatment area in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty has been performed at the treatment area, each of the tacks of the plurality of tacks comprising an annular band and a plurality of barbs on an outer annular periphery, and extending annularly around a longitudinal axis and extending longitudinally between a distal most end and a proximal most end which defines a tack width;
expanding a first tack of the plurality of tacks to hold the plaque dissection against a wall of the blood vessel; and
expanding a second tack of the plurality of tacks to hold the plaque dissection against the wall of the blood vessel, the second tack spaced away from the first tack a distance equal to at least the tack width of the second tack such that a portion of the treatment area between the first and second tacks that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty includes diseased tissue that is not covered by a tack.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein expanding the first tack comprises allowing the first tack to self-expand.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the width of the tack is about equal to or less than its diameter when expanded in a blood vessel.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein each of the tacks of the plurality of tacks further comprise a pair of concentric rings spaced apart coaxially from each other and connected by one or more longitudinally extending bridge members.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the first and second tacks and any additional tacks are only applied where specific holding forces are needed to either stabilize the treatment area or hold pieces of plaque out of the way of blood flow in the treatment area.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein only half of the treatment area that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty is covered with tacks.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein less than half of the treatment area that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty is covered with tacks.

### Claim 9 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising delivering plaque treatment medication to the blood vessel with at least one of the first tack and the second tack.

### Claim 10 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising expanding one or more additional tacks at a damage, disruption, dissection, or irregularity in the blood vessel caused by the balloon angioplasty, the one or more additional tacks holding down the damaged, disrupted, dissected, or irregular blood vessel surface and each tack spaced away from all other tacks by at least the width of the tack.

### Claim 11

A method of further treating atherosclerotic occlusive disease in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty, comprising:
advancing a plurality of tacks to a treatment area in a blood vessel after a balloon angioplasty has been performed at the treatment area, each of the tacks of the plurality of tacks having a distal most end and a proximal most end along a longitudinal axis, and having a tack width defined by the distance between the distal most end and the proximal most end;
expanding a first tack of the plurality of tacks against a wall of the blood vessel at the treatment area; and
expanding a second tack of the plurality of tacks against the wall of the blood vessel at the treatment area, the second tack spaced away from the first tack a distance equal to at least the tack width of the second tack such that a portion of the treatment area between the first and second tacks that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty includes diseased tissue that is not covered by a tack.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein expanding the first tack comprises allowing the first tack to self-expand.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the width of the tack is about equal to or less than its diameter when expanded in a blood vessel.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the first and second tacks and any additional tacks are only applied where specific holding forces are needed to either stabilize the treatment area or hold pieces of plaque out of the way of blood flow in the treatment area.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein only half of the treatment area that has been treated by the balloon angioplasty is covered with tacks.
