## Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a system that includes a detection device and a processor. The detection device is configured to sense that a handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface. In response to sensing that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface, the detection device is configured to transmit an indicator to the processor. The processor is configured to receive a first audio signal, and determine that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface by receiving the indicator from the detection device. In response to determining that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface, the processor is further configured to apply a compensating function to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal, and transmit the second audio signal to a speaker.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system, comprising:
a detection device configured to:
sense that a handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface; and
in response to sensing that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface, transmit an indicator to a processor; and
the processor configured to
receive a first audio signal;
determine that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface by receiving the indicator from the detection device; and
in response to determining that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface:
apply a compensating function to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal, and
transmit the second audio signal to a speaker.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein applying a compensating function to the first audio signal comprises equalizing the acoustic level of the first audio signal.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, wherein equalizing the acoustic level of the first audio signal comprises increasing the acoustic level of the first audio signal by 6 dB at frequencies below a first threshold frequency.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The system of claim 3, wherein the first threshold frequency corresponds to a wavelength that is associated with a dimension of the handheld device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The system of claim 3, wherein the first threshold frequency corresponds to a wavelength that is three times as long as a dimension of the handheld device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is determined to have not been placed on or near a surface if a detection device included in the handheld device senses that a translational movement of the handheld device is above a first threshold.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the detection device comprises a gyroscopic sensor.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the detection device comprises an accelerometer.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is determined to have not been placed on or near a surface if a detection device included in the handheld device senses that a rotational position of the handheld device is within a specified range.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is determined to have not been placed on or near a surface if a third audio signal that is generated and transmitted by the handheld device is detected at an acoustic level that exceeds a first threshold.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the wherein the third audio signal includes a frequency that corresponds to a wavelength that is more than three times as long as a dimension of the handheld device.

### Claim 12

A method for processing audio in a handheld device, comprising:
receiving a first audio signal;
determining that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface; and
in response to determining that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface:
applying a compensating function to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal, and
transmitting the second audio signal to a speaker.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein applying a compensating function to the first audio signal comprises equalizing the acoustic level of the first audio signal.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein equalizing the acoustic level of the first audio signal comprises increasing the acoustic level of the first audio signal by 6 dB at frequencies below a first threshold frequency.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the first threshold frequency corresponds to a wavelength that is associated with a dimension of the handheld device.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the first threshold frequency corresponds to a wavelength that is three times as long as a dimension of the handheld device.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the handheld device is determined to have not been placed on or near a surface if a detection device included in the handheld device senses that a translational movement of the handheld device is above a first threshold.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, wherein the detection device comprises a gyroscopic sensor.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, wherein the detection device comprises an accelerometer.

### Claim 20

A computer-readable storage-medium including program instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
receive a first audio signal;
determine that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface; and
in response to determining that the handheld device has not been placed on or near a surface:
apply a compensating function to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal, and
transmit the second audio signal to a speaker.
