## Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for providing improved spectrum efficiency by triggering a ranked transmission. In this regard, a method is provided that includes causing a configuration message to be transmitted to a mobile terminal, wherein the configuration message provides interpretation information for a frequency hopping flag bit. The method also includes determining a rank for a transmission. The method may include setting a rank indication in the frequency hopping flag bit of a downlink control message based on the determined rank of the transmission.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
causing a configuration message to be transmitted to a mobile terminal, wherein the configuration message provides interpretation information for a frequency hopping flag bit;
determining a rank for a transmission; and
setting a rank indication in the frequency hopping flag bit of a downlink control message based on the determined rank of the transmission.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, wherein causing a configuration message to be transmitted further comprises providing trigger information for rank-2 Uplink Control Information-only Physical Uplink Shared Channel “PUSCH” transmission.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, further comprising determining whether a mobile terminal will use frequency hopping in an Uplink Control Information-only PUSCH transmission.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, wherein determining a rank further comprises determining a rank for the transmission based on an uplink channel status.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, further comprising receiving the transmission from the mobile terminal, wherein the transmission is encoded using a predetermined precoder.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, wherein the determining the rank for the transmission further comprises determining whether the transmission will use at least one of rank-1 and rank-2 for the Uplink Control Information -only PUSCH transmission.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, wherein the configuration message is a downlink control information “DCI” format 0 message.

### Claim 8

An apparatus comprising a processor and a memory including software, the memory and the software configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to at least:
cause a configuration message to be transmitted to a mobile terminal, wherein the configuration message provides interpretation information for a frequency hopping flag bit;
determine a rank for a transmission from a mobile terminal; and
set a rank indication in the frequency hopping flag bit of a downlink control message based on the determined rank of the transmission.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the at least one memory including the computer program code is further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to provide trigger information for a rank-2 Uplink Control Information-only Physical Uplink Shared Channel “PUSCH” transmission.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the at least one memory including the computer program code is further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to determine whether a mobile terminal will use frequency hopping in an Uplink Control Information-only PUSCH transmission.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the at least one memory including the computer program code is further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to determine a rank further comprises determining a rank for the transmission based on an uplink channel status.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the at least one memory including the computer program code is further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to receive the transmission from the mobile terminal, wherein the transmission is encoded using a predetermined precoder.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the at least one memory including the computer program code is further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to determine whether the transmission will use at least one of rank-1 and rank-2 for the Uplink Control Information-only PUSCH transmission.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the configuration message is a downlink control information “DCI” format 0 message.
