## Abstract

The invention consists of a new registration and authentication protocol for between a Mobile Node and a Home Agent. The new protocol uses a novel messaging sequence to request registration, authentication and authorization of the Mobile Node when it is located on a foreign network, and the novel protocol will avoid some of the standard registration and authentication protocol messages in order to eliminate the problems associated with re-transmission errors.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-20. (canceled)

### Claim 21

A method for registration and authentication of a mobile node on a foreign network comprising:
a foreign agent on the foreign network communicating with one or more Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) servers of a home network of the mobile node to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
the foreign agent receiving a registration request message from the mobile node after initiating communication with the one or more AAA servers to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
the foreign agent transmitting the registration request message to the home agent without transmission to the one or more AAA servers if the authentication of the mobile node is confirmed by the one or more AAA servers;
the foreign agent receiving a registration response to the registration request message from the home agent upon confirmation by the home agent of the authentication of the mobile node through the one or more AAA servers; and
the foreign agent transmitting the registration response to the registration request message to the mobile node.

### Claim 22 (depends on 1)

The method of registration of claim 1, wherein said communicating with the one or more AAA servers comprises:
transmitting an initial message sequence from the foreign agent to a first AAA server on the foreign network.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The method of registration of claim 22, wherein the first AAA server is further configured to transmit the initial message sequence to a AAA server of the home network.

### Claim 24 (depends on 23)

The method of registration of claim 23, further comprising:
the foreign agent receiving a response to the initial message sequence from the AAA server on the home network.

### Claim 25 (depends on 21)

The method of registration of claim 21, wherein the home agent is configured to confirm the authenticity of the registration request by communicating a sequence of messages with the one or more AAA servers.

### Claim 26 (depends on 25)

The method of registration of claim 25, wherein the sequence of messages comprises a registration request message transmitted from the home agent to the one or more AAA servers, wherein the sequence of messages comprises a registration response message transmitted from the one or more AAA servers to the home agent.

### Claim 27 (depends on 21)

The method of registration of claim 21, further comprising:
establishing security parameters with the one or more AAA servers.

### Claim 28 (depends on 27)

The method of registration of claim 27, wherein the security parameters comprise one or more security keys for performing secure communication.

### Claim 29

A foreign agent on a foreign network for a mobile node, comprising:
communication circuitry, configured to communicate with the mobile node and one or more servers of a home network of the mobile node;
processing hardware coupled to the communication circuitry, wherein the processing hardware and communication circuitry are configured to operate together to:
communicate with a first AAA server of the home network of the mobile node to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
receive a registration request message from the mobile node after initiating communication with the first AAA server to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
transmit the registration request message to the home agent without transmission to the first AAA server if the authentication of the mobile node is confirmed by the first AAA server;
receive a registration response to the registration request message from the home agent upon confirmation by the home agent of the authentication of the mobile node through the first AAA server; and
transmit the registration response to the registration request message to the mobile node.

### Claim 30 (depends on 29)

The foreign agent of claim 29, wherein communicating with the first AAA server comprises transmitting an initial message sequence from the foreign agent to a second AAA server on the foreign network.

### Claim 31 (depends on 30)

The foreign agent of claim 30, wherein the second AAA server is further configured to transmit the initial message sequence to the first AAA server on the home network.

### Claim 32 (depends on 31)

The foreign agent of claim 31, wherein the processing hardware is further configured to receive a response to the initial message sequence from the first AAA server on the home network.

### Claim 33 (depends on 29)

The foreign agent of claim 29, wherein the home agent is configured to confirm the authenticity of the registration request by communicating a sequence of messages with first AAA server.

### Claim 34 (depends on 29)

The foreign agent of claim 29, wherein the sequence of messages comprises a registration request message transmitted from the home agent to the first AAA server and wherein the sequence of messages comprises a registration response message transmitted from the first AAA server to the home agent.

### Claim 35 (depends on 29)

The foreign agent of claim 29, wherein the processing hardware is further configured to:
establish security parameters with the first AAA server.

### Claim 36 (depends on 35)

The foreign agent of claim 35, wherein the security parameters comprise one or more security keys for performing secure communication.

### Claim 37

A non-transitory computer accessible memory medium storing program instructions for registration and authentication of a mobile node on a foreign network, wherein the program instructions are executable by a processor of the foreign agent to:
communicate with a first AAA server of a home network of the mobile node to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
receive a registration request message from the mobile node after initiating communication with the first AAA server to confirm the authentication of the mobile node;
transmit the registration request message to the home agent without transmission to the first AAA server if the authentication of the mobile node is confirmed by the first AAA server;
