## Abstract

In a sensor system for determining the control signal supplied to the ciliary muscles of an eye for adjusting the focal length of the lens of an eye, a contact element of an electrically non-conductive material and provided with sensors is disposed on the cornea of the eye so that the sensors are arranged in contact with an annular area of the cornea next to the ciliary eye muscles so as to be able to sense the focal adjustment signals supplied to the ciliary muscles and the sensed adjustment signals are supplied to a signal processing unit which provides a control signal to a lens system with adjustable focal length for adjusting the focal length thereof depending on the focal adjustment signals of the ciliary eye muscles.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A sensor system for determining control signals of a ciliary muscle (10) of an eye (5) having a cornea (6), a lens (7) a pupil (9), an iris (8), ciliary muscles (10), Müller muscles (11), Brück muscles (12) and zenular fibers (13), the sensor system comprising:
a) a contact element (16) consisting of an electrically non-conductive material for disposition on the cornea (6) in contact with the area of the eye around the iris (8) thereof,
b) a sensor system with at least one sensor (17) applied to the contact element (18) in an annular array around the iris, and
c) a signal processing arrangement (39) disposed on, or in, the contact element (16),
d) each sensor (17) comprising at least three electrodes (1, 2) oriented in the same direction (4) and arranged in a row,
e) the orientations comprising at least one orientation in a radial direction with respect to the iris (8) and
f) each sensor having an intermediate electrode (1) which forms a reference potential and two electrodes (2) which are disposed in the orientation direction directly adjacent and at opposite sides of the intermediate electrode (1) and which determines an eye body potential with respect to the reference potential.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The sensor system according to claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor (17) is arranged on an annular surface area (18) of the contact element (16) around the iris (18).

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The sensor system according to claim 2, wherein at least two sensors (17) are provided which have orientations (4) in tangential as well as radial directions with respect to the iris (8).

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The sensor system, according to claim 3, wherein each sensor (17) has either only a tangential or a radial orientation with respect to the iris (3) and the sensors are arranged on the annular surface area (18) with alternate orientations.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The sensor system according to claim 1, wherein the sensor comprise at least four measuring electrodes (2) arranged around a center electrode (1) in tangential and also in radial orientations with respect to the iris (8).

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The sensor system according to claim 2, wherein a sensor comprises as electrodes three electrode rings (24) or ring sections (25) arranged on the annular surface area (18) concentrically with respect to the iris (8).

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The sensor system, according to claim 1, wherein at least four sensors (17) with tangential orientation are provided.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The sensor system according to claim 1, wherein the contact element (16) is a contact lens.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The sensor system according to claim 1, wherein the signal processing arrangement (30) comprises a signal conditioning unit (29) and a signal recognition unit (30) with a generator for generating a control signal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The sensor system according to claim 9, wherein the system includes a lens system or lens with an adjustable focal length and the signal processing arrangement (39) includes transmission means for transmitting the control signal to the lens system or lens for adjusting the focal length thereof depending on the control signal.
