## Abstract

A device suppresses flicker and improves compatibility of a lamp including at least one solid state light source, the lamp being operably connected to a control circuit, such as a dimmer circuit. The device includes a connector enabling connection of the solid state light source to a lamp socket configured to receive an incandescent light source, and an adapter circuit connected in parallel with the at least one solid state light source when the solid state light source is connected to the socket via the connector. The adapter circuit provides a resistive path for current to pass through the lamp, during all or part of the AC mains cycle.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A device for suppressing flicker of a lamp including at least one solid state light source, the lamp being operably connected to a control circuit, the device comprising:
a connector enabling connection of the solid state light source to a lamp socket configured to receive an incandescent light source; and
an adapter circuit connected in parallel with the at least one solid state light source when the solid state light source is connected to the socket via the connector.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one solid state light source comprises a light emitting diode (LED).

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the adapter circuit is contained in an extender, the extender comprising a screw base, configured for insertion in the lamp socket, and an extender socket configured to receive the lamp that includes the at least one solid state light source.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the adapter circuit is contained in a thin disk-like housing configured for insertion between the lamp and the screw-base socket.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the adapter circuit is contained within the lamp that includes the at least one solid state light source.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The device of claim 5, wherein the adapter circuit comprises a resistor.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the control circuit is a dimmer and the lamp further includes a driver configured to provide a drive voltage to the solid state light source in response to a dimmed mains voltage from the dimmer via the lamp socket.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the control circuit is an occupancy sensor circuit or a switched circuit, including a nightlight.

### Claim 9

An extender device for suppressing flicker in a lighting unit including at least one light emitting diode (LED); the device comprising:
an extender base configured to be inserted into a lamp socket connected to a dimmer, the lamp socket being configured to receive an incandescent lighting unit;
an extender socket configured to receive the lighting unit including the at least one LED; and
an adapter circuit located between the extender base and the extender socket, and configured to be electrically connected in parallel with the at least one LED when the lighting unit is inserted in the extender socket, wherein the adapter circuit suppresses flicker of the at least one LED caused by the dimmer.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The device of claim 9, wherein the extender base comprises screw base.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The device of claim 10, wherein the lamp socket comprises a screw socket configured to receive the incandescent lighting unit.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The device of claim 10, wherein the extender socket comprises a screw socket.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The device of claim 9, wherein the extender base comprises pin base, and the lamp socket comprises a pin socket configured to receive the incandescent lighting unit.

### Claim 14

A retrofit solid state light source device, comprising:
a driver configured to receive a dimmed mains voltage from a dimmer and to output a drive current based on a dimming level of the dimmed mains voltage;
a solid state lighting module comprising at least one solid state light source, the solid state lighting module being configured to receive the drive current from the driver;
an adapter circuit connected in parallel with the solid state lighting module for suppressing flicker of the at least one solid state light source and/or improving compatibility of the at least one solid state light source with dimmers or other controllers; and
a connector configured to connect the solid state light source device with a socket configured to receive an incandescent lighting unit.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The device of claim 14, wherein the at least one solid state light source comprises a light emitting diode (LED).

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The device of claim 14, wherein the adapter circuit comprises a resistor.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

The device of claim 14, wherein the adapter circuit comprises a cat-ear bleeder.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

The device of claim 13, wherein the driver comprises:
a voltage rectifier configured to rectify the dimmed mains voltage; and
a power converter configured to convert the rectified dimmed mains voltage to a DC voltage and corresponding current, output to the solid state lighting module as the drive current.
