## Abstract

A support for a variably positioning a platform which is adapted to hold a book or electronic display for convenient viewing, the support having a pair of swing arms pivotally connected together end to end and to an upright standard, with the platform connected to an outer end of one swing arm with a two orthogonal pivot connections to a platform mount and a pivot connection between the mount and platform. This creates five axes of independent pivoting movement of various components available to position the platform. A friction element for some of the pivot connections allows tightening of an adjustment screw to increase or decrease the friction to stabilize the platform in a selected position without tending to loosen the screw and the associated pivot connection.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A support for positioning a generally planar platform in a range of locations and orientations, comprising:
an upright standard;
a first swing arm having an inner end pivotally connected to said upright standard to allow rotation thereof about a first axis so as to be able to swing about said standard and an outer end pivotally connected to an inner end of a second swing arm about a second axis so as to allow relative pivoting of said first and second swing arms about said pivotal connection in parallel planes;
an outer end of said second swing arm pivotally connected to a shaft projecting radially away from said outer end about a third axis so as to allow swinging in a radial plane relative to said second swing arm;
said shaft received in a bore in a barrel piece attached to a support pivotally mounted to said platform with a friction element interposed and retarding pivoting of said platform thereon;
said shaft rotatable therein about a fourth axis and said platform pivotable on said support about a fifth axis whereby said platform is variably positionable relative said upright standard by independent pivoting of said first and second swing arm parts, said shaft part and said platform part.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The support according to claim 1 wherein at least one of said pivotal connections includes a friction inducing element which is fixed to one pivotally connected part and slidably engaged with the other pivotally connected part to thereby create friction retarding relative pivoting movement therebetween.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The support according to claim 2 further including a threaded element engaged in a threaded bore in said one part and having a head received in said friction element to be engaged therewith to enable a tightening thereof to adjust the pressure exerted by engagement of said friction element on said outer part by tightening of said threaded element to create an adjustable frictional retardation of said relative pivotal movement, with said pivoting movement thereby not tending to loosen said threaded element.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The support according to claim 3 wherein said shaft has a groove formed therein and wherein a pin is held urged into with one end in engagement against the surface to act to hold said shaft in said bore and to frictionally retard rotation of said shaft.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The support according to claim 3 wherein said friction inducing element comprises a circular piece received in a bore in said other part and having key features received in slots formed in said one part to be rotationally fixed thereto, said element having a flange engaging a shoulder on said bore to thereby establish frictional engagement with said other part.
