## Abstract

The present invention discloses a security device constructed from a material having a skin depth that is greater than about 10 times the normal skin depth for radio frequency identification device functioning in one of UHF, HF and LF frequencies. The security device of the present invention provides a more durable and robust security device that can be used in facilitating brand identification and awareness. In one embodiment the antenna material of the present invention may illustrate a wide variety of visual information.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A security device having a radio frequency identification device (RFID) comprising:
a material for use in forming an antenna having a perimeter and at least one opening formed in the material, the opening having an open end in the perimeter and extending inwardly from the perimeter and a closed end that terminates in an area of the material away from the perimeter wherein the opening has a first side and a second side;
an integrated circuit disposed between the first and second side of the opening; and
wherein the material has a thickness greater than 10 times skin depth required for radio frequency purposes in one of UHF, HF or LF and the at least one opening forms an antenna for use with an RFID device.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the antenna material is shaped by cutting, milling, punching, stamping, spark erosion, or laser ablation.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the antenna material displays information about a company.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The security device of claim 3, wherein the information is applied to the antenna material either by embossing or by forming a depression and filling the depression with paint.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the security device further comprises a fastener mechanism.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the at least one opening is filled with material.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The security device of claim 6, wherein the material is either epoxy based or a thermoplastic.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the security device further comprises a lanyard.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the antenna material is a conductive material.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the antenna material contains a plurality of openings, wherein each opening forming a distinct antenna.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The security device of claim 1, wherein the antenna material is in the configuration of a geometric shape, trademark or symbol.

### Claim 12

A method of constructing a RFID security device comprising the steps of:
providing a conductive material having a perimeter and an integrated circuit, the conductive material having a thickness greater than 10 times skin depth required for radio frequency purposes in one of UHF, HF or LF;
cutting at least one opening in the conductive material, the opening has an open end in the perimeter and a closed end extending in an area of the conductive material inwardly from the perimeter and the opening has a first and second side; and
attaching an integrated circuit between the first and second side of the opening to form an RFID device.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising filling the opening with material.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the at least one opening is filled with a thermoplastic by injection.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the at least one opening is filled with an epoxy based material by coating.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, comprising a further step of shaping the antenna material into a geometric shape.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

A security device constructed by the method of claim 12.

### Claim 18

A security device having a radio frequency identification device attached to an article wherein the security device comprises:
a blank of conductive material for use in forming an antenna having a perimeter and at least one opening formed in the conductive material, the opening having an open end in the perimeter and extending inwardly from the perimeter and a closed end that terminates in an area of the material away from the perimeter wherein the opening has a first side and a second side; and
an integrated circuit disposed between the first and second side of the opening; and
wherein the material has a thickness greater than 10 times skin depth required for radio frequency purposes in one of UHF, HF or LF and the at least one opening forms an antenna for use with an RFID device.

### Claim 19

A security device having a radio frequency identification device (RFID) comprising:
a metal in combination with at least one other material for use in forming an antenna having a perimeter and at least one opening formed in the metal, the opening having an open end in the perimeter and extending inwardly from the perimeter and a closed end that terminates in an area of the metal away from the perimeter wherein the opening has a first side and a second side;
an integrated circuit disposed between the first and second side of the opening; and
wherein the metal has a thickness greater than 10 times skin depth required for radio frequency purposes in one of UHF, HF or LF and the at least one opening forms an antenna for use with an RFID device.

### Claim 20

A security device having a radio frequency identification device (RFID) comprising:
a first and second material for use in forming an antenna having a perimeter and at least one opening formed in the material, the opening having an open end in the perimeter and extending inwardly from the perimeter and a closed end that terminates in an area of the first and second material away from the perimeter wherein the opening has a first side and a second side;
an integrated circuit disposed between the first and second side of the opening; and
wherein the material has a thickness greater than 10 times skin depth required for radio frequency purposes in one of UHF, HF or LF and the at least one opening forms an antenna for use with an RFID device.
