## Claims

### Claim at position 1

-43. (canceled)

### Claim 44

A pH sensor comprising a sensing electrode of a bare metal having an electroactive surface sealed within a tube comprising a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene such as to provide a barrier for the signal electrode to oxygen and anions from the environment exterior to the tube except as may pass through the tube and a gel-filled reference electrode.

### Claim 45 (depends on 44)

The pH sensor of claim 44 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 46 (depends on 44)

The pH sensor of claim 44 wherein the sensing electrode is a rod of high purity metal consisting of antimony/antimony oxide or bismuth/bismuth oxide.

### Claim 47 (depends on 46)

The pH sensor of claim 46 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 48 (depends on 46)

The pH sensor of claim 46 wherein the sensing electrode is a rod of high purity bismuth/bismuth oxide wherein the purity of the metal is at least 99.999%.

### Claim 49 (depends on 48)

The pH sensor of claim 48 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 50 (depends on 46)

The pH sensor of claim 46 wherein the rod of high purity antimony/antimony oxide has a diameter of 0.375 to 0.625 inches and a length of 0.5 to 0.75 inches.

### Claim 51 (depends on 50)

The pH sensor of claim 50 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 52 (depends on 44)

The pH sensor of claim 44 wherein the reference electrode comprises an electrode in contact with an electrolytic gel wherein the electrode and gel are enclosed within a non-conductive, waterproof container having a water-porous but not gel-porous, ion exchange interface.

### Claim 53 (depends on 52)

The pH sensor of claim 52 wherein the reference electrode is comprised of silver metal coated with silver chloride, and wherein the purity of the silver metal is at least about 99.99% by weight.

### Claim 54 (depends on 52)

The pH sensor of claim 52 wherein the electrolytic gel is a gelled solution saturated with sodium chloride and further saturated with silver chloride.

### Claim 55 (depends on 44)

The pH sensor of claim 44 further comprising a temperature sensitive element in proximity to the signal electrode and reference electrode such that the temperature sensitive element provides an indication of temperature corresponding to a temperature of the sensing electrode and the reference electrode.

### Claim 56 (depends on 55)

The pH sensor of claim 55 wherein the temperature sensitive element is a thermistor in a resin sealant.

### Claim 57 (depends on 55)

The pH sensor of claim 55 further comprising a device connected to the sensing electrode and the reference electrode for monitoring the pH in an aquatic environment and for controlling pH in an aquatic environment.
