## Abstract

A smoking article such as a cigarette 1 has a wrapper in the form of a tube 5 that has lines of weakness 10 formed e.g. by laser cutting on the inside to define an array of visually discernable facets 12 on the outside.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A smoking article component including a curved sheet wrapper that includes a plurality of lines of strength discontinuity such that the wrapper presents visually discernable facets between the lines.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A smoking article component according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of lines of strength discontinuity comprises lines of weakness.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A smoking article component according to claim 2 wherein the lines of weakness comprise partial cuts into the thickness of the sheet material.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A smoking article component according to claim 3 wherein the partial cuts are on the side of the sheet material that faces inside.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3, 4)

A smoking article component according to claim 3 or 4 wherein the partial cuts have been formed by laser cutting.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

A smoking article component according to claim 2 wherein the lines of weakness have been formed by pin embossing.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A smoking article component according to claim 1 including a coating on the wrapper providing the lines of strength discontinuity.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

A smoking article component according to claim 7 wherein the coating comprises a varnish.

### Claim 9

A smoking article component according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the lines of strength discontinuity define an array of the facets over the sheet wrapper.

### Claim 10

A smoking article component according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the lines of strength discontinuity intersect or merge to define facets having a closed shape.

### Claim 11

A smoking article component according to any one of the preceding claims wherein a plurality of the facets are of the same shape and disposed in an array.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

A smoking article component according to claim 11 wherein a first array of facets of a first shape are arranged in a first array in a first portion of the wrapper and a second array of facets of a second different shape from the first facets are arranged in a second array in a second portion of the wrapper.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

A smoking article component according to claim 12 wherein opposite edges of the wrapper have a shape defined by the edges of the facets such that when wrapped to abut one another, the opposite edges of the sheet form a butt joint against one another such that the array extends across the butt joint.

### Claim 14

A smoking article component according to any preceding claim wherein the wrapper is disposed on an underlying support layer.

### Claim 15

A smoking article component according to any preceding claim wherein the wrapper is disposed in a tubular configuration.

### Claim 16

A smoking article configuration according to any preceding claim wherein longitudinal side edges of the wrapper are disposed in a butt joint.

### Claim 17

A smoking article component according to any preceding claim including a curved surface around which the wrapper is provided, wherein the facets have a different curvature from that of the curved surface.

### Claim 18

A smoking article component according to any preceding claim and comprising at least one of a filter and a tobacco rod with a curved surface wrapped with the sheet wrapper.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

A smoking article component according to claim 18 wherein at least some of the lines of strength discontinuity extend longitudinally of the filter or tobacco rod.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18, 19)

A smoking article including a smoking article component according to claim 18 or 19.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

A smoking article according to claim 20 including a rod of smokeable material, a first filter attached to the rod, a second filter, said wrapper being wrapped around and attached to the second filter to form a tube in which the first filter and rod are slidably received.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

A smoking article according to claim 21 wherein the first filter is attached to the rod of smokeable material by a circumferential tipping, and the wrapper has a re-entrant flap which abuts the tipping to prevent the rod from being withdrawn out of the tube.

### Claim 23

A method of making smoking article including wrapping a sheet wrapper around the article, the wrapper including a plurality of lines of strength discontinuity such that the wrapper bends so as to present visually discernable facets between the lines.

### Claim 24 (depends on 23)

A method according to claim 23 including forming the lines of strength discontinuity by partial cutting or creasing.

### Claim 25 (depends on 23, 24)

A method according to claim 23 or 24 wherein the lines of weakness are prepared on or off-line from a making machine for smoking articles.

### Claim 26 (depends on 23, 24, 25)

A method according to any one of claims 23 to 25 including printing or embossing information on the wrapper in a predetermined spatial relationship to the lines of strength discontinuity.

### Claim 27

A sheet wrapper configured to be wrapped around a smoking article component, the wrapper including a plurality of lines of strength discontinuity such that when so wrapped, the wrapper bends and presents visually discernable facets between the lines.

### Claim 28 (depends on 27)

A wrapper according to claim 27 wherein the component has a curved surface around which the wrapper is wrapped and the facets have a curvature different from that of the curved surface.

### Claim 29 (depends on 27, 28)

A wrapper according to claim 27 or 28 having a generally rectangular configuration and being configured to be formed into a tube with a re-entrant flap at one end of the tube.
