## Abstract

A method of altering the composition of animal waste including introducing internally to an animal one or more treatment substances that can directly or indirectly affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds in animal waste, such that animal waste acts as a carrier so that the one or more substances affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds once the waste has been excreted from the animal.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of altering the composition of animal waste comprising introducing internally to an animal one or more treatment substances that can directly or indirectly affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds in animal waste, such that animal waste acts as a carrier so that the one or more substances affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds once the waste has been excreted from the animal.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more treatment substances is DCD.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the DCD is introduced internally to the animal at a rate sufficient to ensure that DCD is excreted in the animal's urine so as to apply the DCD to land at a rate of at least substantially 7 kg per hectare.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the DCD is introduced internally to the animal at a rate sufficient to ensure that DCD is excreted in the animal's urine so as to apply the DCD to land at a rate of less than substantially 15 kg per hectare.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the DCD is introduced internally to the animal at a rate sufficient to ensure that DCD is excreted in the animal's urine so as to apply the DCD to land at a rate of substantially 10 kg per hectare.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the DCD is introduced internally over a treatment period of late autumn and winter.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, including the step of determining an excretion rate for the DCD.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the excretion rate is at least substantially 7 kg per hectare.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the excretion rate is less than substantially 15 kg per hectare.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the excretion rate is substantially 10 kg per hectare.

### Claim 11 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, further comprising a step of determining a dosage rate of the DCD to be introduced internally to the animal.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the dosage rate is calculated by determining an excretion efficiency, and adding the excretion efficiency to the excretion rate.

### Claim 13 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, further comprising a step of adding the DCD to a feed stock prior to feeding the feed stock to the animal.

### Claim 14 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the DCD is introduced internally to a cow at a rate in the range of 10-30 grams per day

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method as claimed in claim 14, wherein the DCD is administered to the cow at a rate of substantially 15 grams per day.

### Claim 16 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the DCD is introduced internally to a sheep at a rate in the range of 2 to 5 grams per day

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method as claimed in claim 16, wherein the DCD is administered to the sheep at a rate of substantially 3 grams per day.

### Claim 18 (depends on 7)

The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein calculating the excretion rate includes considering parameters of land onto which the animal waste is to be excreted.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

The method as claimed in claim 16, wherein the parameters include are selected from the list of: soil type, porosity, drainage and rainfall.

### Claim 20

A method for decreasing the amount of convertible nitrogen released from an animal comprising administering internally to the animal an effective amount of a treatment substance capable of directly or indirectly affecting the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds in animal waste, such that animal waste acts as a carrier so that the one or more substances affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds once the waste is excreted from the animal.

### Claim 21

A delivery device for altering the composition of animal waste, wherein the delivery device is adapted to deliver internally to an animal one or more treatment substances that can directly or indirectly affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds in animal waste, and wherein the delivery device is configured such that animal waste acts as a carrier so that the one or more substances affect the conversion of nitrogen containing compounds once the waste is excreted from the animal.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The delivery device as claimed in claim 21, wherein the nitrogen process modifier is DCD.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The delivery device as claimed in claim 22, configured to release the DCD at a rate sufficient to ensure that DCD is excreted in the animal's urine so as to apply the DCD to land at a rate of at least substantially 7 kg per hectare.

### Claim 24 (depends on 22)

The delivery device as claimed in claim 22, wherein the device is configured to release the DCD at a rate sufficient to ensure that DCD is excreted in the animal's urine so as to apply the DCD to land at a rate of less than substantially 15 kg per hectare.
