## Abstract

A pole saw includes a long handle with end adapter, a blade-carrying component pivoted to the end adapter for movement between an extended use position and a handle-adjacent storage position, and a saw blade fixed to the blade-carrying component. The end adapter and holding component are cast aluminum for strength and light weight, and are pivoted together about an offset axis so that the blade and blade-carrying component are positioned adjacent the handle in a partially protected position when collapsed for storage. A folding lock mechanism includes an anchor that engages a saw-holding bolt on the blade-carrying component, and a wing nut that can be tightened to secure the sheath on the blade.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A pole saw apparatus comprising:
a long pole with end adapter defining a pivot axis that is offset from a centerline of the pole;
a blade assembly pivoted to the end adapter for movement about the offset pivot axis between an extended use position and a handle-adjacent storage position.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein the blade assembly includes a blade-carrying component and a saw blade fixedly attached to and supported by the blade-carrying component.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein the blade-carrying component is substantially shorter than the saw blade.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The apparatus defined in claim 2, wherein the blade-carrying component does not define a pocket for receiving teeth of the saw blade, but including a sheath for protecting the blade teeth when not in use.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein the end adapter defines a pivot axis offset from and perpendicular to a longitudinal centerline of the long handle.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, including a retainer for positively frictionally holding the component in the extended use position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The apparatus defined in claim 5, wherein the retainer includes a hook mounted to the end adapter and a pin on the component for engaging the hook when the component is in the extended use position.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The apparatus defined in claim 6, including a sheath defining a cavity shaped to receive the blade to protect the blade, and further the sheath includes an anchoring component shaped to engage the blade-carrying component to hold the sheath on the blade.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein the blade-carrying component includes a pivot pin supporting the saw blade for rotation, a detent for holding the blade in at least one selected position, and a set screw for abutting the blade to adjustably eliminate looseness of the blade on the pivot pin when in the at least one selected position.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein the blade includes a cutting edge and defines a cutting plane, and wherein the end adapter and component include overlapping aperture flanges engaged by a pivot pin for pivotally connecting the end adapter to the component, the pivot pin defining an axis extending parallel the cutting plane for torsional strength along the cutting plane when using the saw blade.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The apparatus defined in claim 1, wherein the long pole is telescopingly-collapsible.

### Claim 11

A folding saw apparatus comprising:
a long handle with end adapter, the handle defining a longitudinal centerline and the end adapter including first apertured flanges defining an offset pivot axis extending perpendicular to but not intersecting the centerline;
a blade assembly including a blade and a blade-carrying component including mating flanges pivoted to the aperture flanges for movement between an extended use position and a storage position where the blade is adjacent the handle; and
a locking mechanism configured to lock the blade and blade-carrying component in the extended use position.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The apparatus defined in claim 11, wherein the locking mechanism includes a first part and a second part, the first part being a resilient pad on one end adapter and component and an abutting surface of the other end adapter and component that engages when in the extended use position, the second part being a hook on one of the end adapters and component and a hook-engaging pin on the other of the end adapter and component that engages when in the extended use position, the resilient pad and the abutting surface providing a resisting force that acts against a retaining force provided by the hook and pin, thus causing friction to more securely retain the component in the extended use position.

### Claim 13

A method of using and storing a pole saw apparatus comprising:
providing a long pole defining a centerline and having an end adapter defining an offset pivot axis not intersecting the centerline;
attaching a blade assembly having a blade and a blade-carrying component to the end adapter for movement about the offset axis between an extended use position where the blade extends longitudinally from the pole and a storage position where the blade is adjacent the long pole;
moving the saw blade and blade-carrying component around the offset pivot axis to the extended use position and then using the saw blade to saw; and
moving the saw blade and blade-carrying component around the offset pivot axis to the storage position to store the saw blade in a position partially protected by the pole.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method defined in claim 13, including providing a sheath with a cavity shaped to receive and protect the saw blade, and including a step of sliding the sheath onto the saw blade.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method defined in claim 13, including providing a locking hook on the blade-carrying component, and including a first step of hooking the hook on a mating feature on the end adapter to hold the saw blade in the extended use position, and including a second step of hooking the hook on a protrusion on the sheath to retain the sheath on the saw blade when in the storage position.
