Device id assignment in a system of devices

A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon program code executable by a processor, the program code comprising:

• code that causes the processor to maintain a first configuration specifying a set of links between a first subset of devices in a system of devices, the first configuration including a device identifier for each device in the first subset;
• code that causes the processor to generate a second configuration specifying a set of links between a second subset of the devices, the second configuration being based on a physical topology of the system, one or more devices in the second subset being unknown devices that are not associated with a device identifier in the physical topology;
• and
• code that causes the processor to assign device identifiers to the unknown devices in the second subset by comparing the first configuration with the second configuration.

A network device comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon program code which, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:
• maintain a first configuration specifying a set of links between a first subset of devices in a system of devices, the first configuration including a device identifier for each device in the first subset;
• generate a second configuration specifying a set of links between a second subset of the devices, the second configuration being based on a physical topology of the system, one or more devices in the second subset being unknown devices that are not associated with a device identifier in the physical topology;
• and
• assign device identifiers to the unknown devices in the second subset by comparing the first configuration with the second configuration.
