Methods and systems of retrieving seismic data by a data server

A system comprising:

• a processor comprising;
• a memory coupled to the processor
• a display device coupled to the processor;
• a network interface device coupled to the processor;
• wherein the memory storing a program that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:
• receive a request to view a first seismic data slice from a seismic data volume organized in parallel layers, the request received by way of a user interface device, and the first seismic data slice spans at a quarter of the layers of the seismic data volume;
• formulate a query that defines the seismic data slice;
• send the query across the network interface device to a data server remotely located from the system;
• receive the datums that reside within the seismic data slice, the receiving across the network interface device;
• and
• render the seismic data slice on the display device.

A system comprising:

• a processor;
• a memory coupled to the processor;
• a network interface device coupled to the processor;
• a storage system coupled to the processor;
• the memory storing a program that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:
• receive a query regarding a seismic data slice, the receipt across the network interface device from a client computer system remotely located from the system;
• read data groups from a seismic data volume stored on the storage system, each data group comprising a datum residing in the seismic data slice and a plurality of datums that do not reside in the seismic data slice;
• save the datum residing in the seismic data slice;
• discard the plurality of datums that do not reside in the seismic data slice;
• repeat the read, save, and discard for a plurality of data groups;
• and then
• send the datums residing within the seismic data slice to the client computer system over the network interface device.
