Abstract
A device which may be formed of suitable elastomeric, biocompatible material is configured to be wedged into Tenon's space between the orbital and scleral walls of the eye at the location of a retinal tear or break. When positioned, the device pushes the eye wall inward to close the tear, and fluid below the retinal wall resorbs.
Claims28
A retinal repair device for insertion into the periocular space adjacent a retinal tear in the eye, the retinal repair device comprising:
- an elongated portion including
- a posterior end,
- an anterior end, opposite the posterior end,
- an orbital facing surface extending from the posterior end to the anterior end and configured to contact the orbital wall, and
- a sclera facing surface extending from the posterior end to the anterior end, opposite the orbital facing surface;
- and
- a thickened portion including a sclera contacting surface distal to the orbital facing surface configured to indent the sclera.
A retinal repair device for insertion into an eye between the sclera and the orbital wall of the eye adjacent a retinal tear in the eye, the retinal repair device comprising:
- a non-inflatable member including
- a posterior end, and
- an anterior end opposite the posterior end;
- a bore extending into the non-inflatable member from the anterior end;
- and
- at least a portion of the non-inflatable member being thickened to indent the sclera of the eye when the retinal repair device is inserted between the sclera and the orbital wall of the eye.
A retinal repair device for insertion into an eye between the sclera and the orbital wall of the eye adjacent a retinal tear in the eye, the retinal repair device comprising:
- an annular rim with a hollow cylinder shape including an open end and a closed end, the annular rim including
- an orbital facing surface at the open end of the hollow cylinder shape;
- a thickened portion extending axially from the closed end of the annular rim in a direction opposite the orbital facing surface, the thickened portion being a cylindrical shape including
- a sclera facing surface distal to the orbital facing surface.
A method for repairing a retinal detachment or tear of an eye with a non-inflatable retinal repair device, the method comprising:
- inserting a non-inflatable retinal repair device including a sclera facing surface and an orbital facing surface between the orbital wall and the sclera in tenon's space and positioning a thickened portion of the non-inflatable retinal repair device at the location of the retinal tear to indent the sclera with the thickened portion and close the retinal tear;
- tacking down the retina at the location of the retinal tear after any retinal fluid beneath the retina resorbs;
- and
- removing the non-inflatable retinal repair device after adhesion of the retina occurs.
