Active cooling system and apparatus for controlling temperature of a fluid used during treatment of biological tissue

A surgical system, the system comprising:

• a surgical instrument;
• a fluid supply reservoir configured to store a fluid, the fluid supply reservoir in fluid communication with the surgical instrument;
• a heat transfer membrane disposed within the fluid supply reservoir, the heat transfer membrane including a heat transfer surface and a fluid conduit defined through the heat transfer membrane, the fluid conduit configured to transfer heat across the heat transfer surface of the heat transfer membrane upon flow of the fluid through the fluid conduit;
• and
• a heat transfer device in thermal communication with the heat transfer membrane.

A method for adjusting temperature of a fluid, comprising:

• circulating a fluid between a surgical instrument and a fluid supply reservoir in fluid communication with the surgical instrument;
• passing the fluid through a heat transfer membrane disposed within the fluid supply reservoir, the heat transfer membrane including a heat transfer surface and a fluid conduit defined through the heat transfer membrane;
• and
• transferring heat across the heat transfer surface of the heat transfer membrane upon flow of the fluid through the fluid conduit to a heat transfer device in thermal communication with the heat transfer membrane.
