Abstract
Curable rubber compositions and cured articles are based on the use of zinc activator compositions for the sulfur cure. Activator compositions contain zinc and a polymeric component having a plurality of COOH groups, at least some of which are neutralized with the zinc. With polymeric zinc activators, sulfur cure can be activated at levels of zinc below those used in conventional systems.
Claims28
A curable rubber composition comprising:
- at least one rubber that can be crosslinked by a sulfur cure,
- a sulfur-based rubber curing agent;
- an activator component comprising a copolymer containing a plurality of COOH groups, wherein at least a portion of the COOH groups is neutralized with at least zinc and wherein the curable rubber composition comprises 0.01-0.5% by weight Zn.
A curable rubber composition comprising:
- at least one rubber that can be crosslinked by a sulfur cure,
- a sulfur-based rubber curing agent;
- an activator component comprising a copolymer containing a plurality of COOH groups, wherein at least a portion of the COOH groups is neutralized with at least zinc and with a member selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, and combinations thereof.
A method of curing a rubber composition, comprising:
- including in the rubber composition a sulfur-based rubber curing agent and an activator component comprising a copolymer containing a plurality of COOH groups, wherein at least a portion of the COOH groups is neutralized with at least zinc and wherein the moldable rubber composition comprises 0.01-0.5% by weight Zn or wherein the at least a portion of the COOH groups is neutralized also with a member selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, and combinations thereof and
- curing the rubber composition.
