Abstract
A pulley member, particularly for an electromagnetically controlled friction clutch in an accessory drive assembly. The pulley member has two mating metal cup members bonded together with a central hub member. Through-hole slots or openings are provided in each of the cup members to provide a break in magnetic flux. A non-magnetic insert member is positioned between the cup members covering the through-holes and sealing them from contamination from environmental factors. The pulley member can be used with vehicle engine accessories such as water pumps and cooling fans.
Claims25
A pulley member comprising:
- a first metal cup member having a first plurality of openings;
- a second metal cup member having a second plurality of openings;
- said first and second plurality of openings being substantially axially and radially aligned;
- at least one non-magnetic insert member positioned between said first and second cup members;
- said insert member covering said first and second plurality of openings;
- wherein passage of environmental contamination through said first and second openings is prevented.
A water pump drive assembly comprising:
- a shaft member and an impeller attached to said shaft member;
- a pulley member;
- said pulley member selectively attached to said shaft member for rotating said shaft member and said impeller;
- an electronic clutch mechanism including an armature and solenoid member for selectively attaching said pulley member to said shaft member;
- said pulley member comprising:
- a first metal cup member having a first plurality of openings;
- a second metal cup member having a second plurality of opening;
- said first and second plurality of openings being substantially axially and radially aligned;
- at least one non-magnetic insert member positioned between said first and second cup members;
- said insert member covering said first and second plurality of openings;
- wherein passage of environmental contamination through said first and second openings is prevented.
A cooling fan drive assembly comprising:
- a shaft member and a cooling fan attached to said shaft member;
- a pulley member;
- said pulley member selectively attached to said shaft member for rotating said shaft member and said cooling fan;
- an electronic clutch mechanism including an armature and solenoid member for selectively attaching said pulley member to said shaft member;
- said pulley member comprising:
- a first metal cup member having a first plurality of openings;
- a second metal cup member having a second plurality of opening;
- said first and second plurality of openings being substantially axially and radially aligned;
- at least one non-magnetic insert member positioned between said first and second cup members;
- said insert member covering said first and second plurality of openings;
- wherein passage of environmental contamination through said first and second openings is prevented.
