Abstract
Open-architecture constituents, such as wood fibers, are coated with an intercalated functional material and bound together to form a solid product, such as a plank. Applications for this material include decking, fencing, and the like. The functional material is applied prior to forming the solid product, either as a coating on each fiber or inserted in a fiber or fiber cluster. As the constituents, such as fibers, wear during use of the product, the functional material is released to provide continual protection of the product, such as UV resistance and fungal resistance.
Claims25
A composite material, comprising
- a. a plurality of open-architecture constituents;
- and
- b. a functional material coating at least a portion of the plurality of open-architecture constituents to produce a plurality of coated constituents,
- wherein the plurality of coated constituents are bound together with intercalated functional material to form a solid product.
A method for producing a composite material, comprising:
- a. producing from an open-architecture material a mass of separate fibers;
- b. exposing the fiber mass to a functional material within a dispersion agent, wherein the functional material adheres to the fibers to produce a functional material coating the fibers;
- and
- c. binding the coated fibers together to form a composite material with functional material intercalated between the fibers.
A construction product, comprising a plurality of individual wood fibers intercalated with at least one functional material and forming a plank.
