Abstract
A first base station transmits at least one message to configure at least one backward compatible carrier and at least one non-backward compatible carrier in a wireless device. The first base station transmits, in response to the first base station making a handover decision, a second message to a second base station. The second message comprises parameters indicating whether the wireless device supports configuration of non-backward compatible carriers, configuration information of at least one backward compatible carrier and/or configuration information of at least one non-backward compatible carrier.
Claims20
A base station comprising:
- a) one or more communication interfaces;
- b) one or more processors;
- and
- c) memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause said base station to:
- i) receive, from a wireless device on a primary carrier in at least one backward compatible carrier, a first message comprising one or more parameters implicitly or explicitly indicating whether said wireless device supports at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- ii) transmit, selectively and if said one or more parameters indicate support of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier, at least one second message comprising configuration parameters including an identifier for each carrier in a plurality of carriers, said plurality of carriers comprising:
- (1) one or more of said at least one backward compatible carrier;
- and
- (2) one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- iii) make a handover decision for said wireless device;
- and
- iv) transmit to a second base station, in response to said handover decision, a third message comprising at least one of:
- (1) said one or more parameters indicating whether said wireless device supports configuration of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- and
- (2) configuration information of said one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier.

A method for use in a base station, said method comprising:
- a) receiving, from a wireless device on a primary carrier in at least one backward compatible carrier, a first message comprising one or more parameters implicitly or explicitly indicating whether said wireless device supports at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- b) transmitting, selectively and if said one or more parameters indicate support of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier, at least one second message comprising configuration parameters including an identifier for each carrier in a plurality of carriers, said plurality of carriers comprising:
- i) one or more of said at least one backward compatible carrier;
- and
- ii) one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- c) making a handover decision for said wireless device;
- and
- d) transmitting to a second base station, in response to said handover decision, a third message comprising at least one of:
- i) said one or more parameters indicating whether said wireless device supports configuration of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- and
- ii) configuration information of said one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier.

A method for use in a network comprising a first base station and a second base station, said method comprising:
- a) receiving by said first base station from a wireless device on a primary carrier in at least one backward compatible carrier, a first message comprising one or more parameters implicitly or explicitly indicating whether said wireless device supports at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- b) transmitting by said first base station to said wireless device, selectively and if said one or more parameters indicate support of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier, at least one second message comprising configuration parameters including an identifier for each carrier in a plurality of carriers, said plurality of carriers comprising:
- i) one or more of said at least one backward compatible carrier;
- and
- ii) one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- c) making, by said first base station, a handover decision for said wireless device;
- and
- d) transmitting, by said first base station to said second base station, in response to said handover decision, a third message comprising at least one of:
- i) said one or more parameters indicating whether said wireless device supports configuration of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier;
- and
- ii) configuration information of said one or more of said at least one non-backward compatible carrier.
