Abstract
In one example, a printer consumable is locked to a content provider. A document that includes content restricted by a provider is printed if the printer consumable is installed in the printer.
Claims20
A method of printing, comprising:
- locking a printer consumable to a content provider;
- receiving at a printing service a request to print, on a specified printer, a document that includes content restricted by the content provider;
- and
- printing the document on the printer if the printer consumable is installed in the printer.
1 more element
A cloud-based printing service, comprising:
- a certificate management system structured to associate a digital certificate of a content provider with a unique locking identifier that relates the certificate to a particular consumable removably installed in a printer, the identifier maintained in a memory of the consumable;
- and
- a document validation service structured to receive a print job to print a document on the printer,
- retrieve the identifier from the consumable,
- determine, using the identifier, whether the document includes a digital signature that corresponds to the certificate, and
- allow the print job to be printed on the printer if the signature corresponds to the certificate.
3 more elements
A printer, comprising:
- a receptacle structured to receive a consumable having a memory including identifier storage for a locking identifier;
- and
- an interface structured to send the locking identifier to a printing service external to the printer responsive to an identifier request from the service, the identifier corresponding to at least one digital certificate of at least one content provider, wherein the printing service uses the locking identifier to determine whether a document requested to be printed on the printer has a digital signature that corresponds to the certificate.
