Abstract
A new user interface and display system for a video display device with a touch screen makes it possible to peek at, that is view briefly, a selected video content while watching other content. During a video peek, video from a second video source will be seen to partially displace and temporarily replace a portion of a video presently being viewed. Selection of the other video sources can be controlled, for example, by swiping with one, two, three or four finger tips and by swiping inwardly from any one of the four edges of a video display. Moreover, the video presently being viewed can be interchanged with the video being peeked at.
Claims20
A user interface for a video display, comprising:
- a touch activatable screen;
- a touch screen processor capable of detecting swiping motions across areas of said screen, including distinguishing between at least one of different directions of said swiping motions, different lengths of said swiping motions and different widths of said swiping motions;
- a video signal processer for selectively supplying a first video image to said screen and for selectively supplying at least one of a plurality of other video images to said screen;
- said at least one of said plurality of other video images being selectively supplied to said screen for a given interval of time responsive to a swiping motion across said screen occurring within given ranges of said directions, said lengths and said widths;
- and,
- said other video image being supplied to said screen being displayed instead of a portion of said first video image.
A method for controlling a video display having a touch activatable screen, comprising the steps of:
- displaying a first video image on said screen;
- detecting a swiping motion across a first area of said screen;
- distinguishing between different possible origins of said swiping motion, different possible directions of said swiping motion and different possible widths of said swiping motion;
- selecting at least one of a plurality of other video images responsive to said distinguishing step;
- supplying said selected video image to said screen for a given interval of time instead of a portion of said first video image;
- and,
- terminating said supplying step upon expiration of said interval of time.
