## Abstract

In accordance with embodiments, there are provided mechanisms and methods for serving an application from a custom subdomain. These mechanisms and methods for serving an application from a custom subdomain can enable improved data security, enhanced system performance, optimized resource utilization, etc.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A computer program product, comprising a non-transitory computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method for serving an application from a custom subdomain, the method comprising:
receiving a selection of a custom subdomain from an organization of a system;
associating the custom subdomain with the organization of the system; and
serving an application of the organization from the custom subdomain.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the custom subdomain is selected utilizing a set up page provided by the system.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the custom subdomain is associated with a name of the organization.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the associating is performed by the system.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the associating includes checking an availability of the custom subdomain.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the associating includes confirming that the custom subdomain is not prohibited.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the associating includes requesting a domain name system (DNS) alias from the selected custom subdomain to a location within the system.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the custom subdomain is associated with an instance of the organization within the system.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the application of the organization is web-based.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the application of the organization is accessed by inputting into a browser a full uniform resource locator (URL) for the application including the custom subdomain.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the computer program product is operable such that custom subdomain replaces an instance specific subdomain.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the computer program product is operable such that the custom subdomain enables the organization to migrate from one instance of the server to another instance in a manner that is transparent to users of the application.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein one or more authentication elements are assigned to the custom subdomain.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the computer program product is operable such that the system identifies the organization based on a URL submitted to the system that includes the custom subdomain.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the system includes a multi-tenant on-demand database system.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the organization includes a tenant of the system.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the custom subdomain includes a domain that is part of a larger domain of the system.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the organization selects the name of the organization as the custom subdomain.

### Claim 19

A method, comprising:
receiving a selection of a custom subdomain from an organization of a system, utilizing a processor;
associating the custom subdomain with the organization of the system; and
serving an application of the organization from the custom subdomain.

### Claim 20

An apparatus, comprising:
a processor for:
receiving a selection of a custom subdomain from an organization of a system;
associating the custom subdomain with the organization of the system; and
serving an application of the organization from the custom subdomain.

### Claim 21

A method for transmitting code for use in a multi-tenant database system on a transmission medium, the method comprising:
transmitting code for receiving a selection of a custom subdomain from an organization of a system, utilizing a processor;
transmitting code for associating the custom subdomain with the organization of the system; and
transmitting code for serving an application of the organization from the custom subdomain.
