## Abstract

A canister assembly for use with a medical suction or aspiration device having a ball float assembly defined in the lid. The lid accepts a replaceable filter cartridge containing a filter element. The ball float engages the replaceable filter cartridge when the canister is near full.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A lid assembly for a suction canister comprising:
a lid body, having a lip defined therein for engagement with a canister;
a hollow cylindrical structure, having a top portion extending above a top surface of said lid and a bottom portion extending below a bottom surface of said lid, such that said bottom portion of said cylindrical structure will contact fluid collected in a canister to which it is attached when the canister is nearly full;
a bottom wall, covering all or a portion of the open end of said bottom portion of said cylindrical structure;
one or more slots, defined in the bottom portion of said cylindrical structure, allowing fluid communication with the canister; and
one or more tabs, defined in bottom portion of said cylindrical structure, said tabs extending into the interior of said cylindrical structure at said one or more slots.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The lid assembly of claim 1 wherein said lid body defines an orifice therein allowing fluid communication between a fluid collection device and the interior of the canister.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The lid assembly of claim 1 wherein all elements of said lid assembly are composed of a high density polyethylene.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The lid assembly of claim 1 further comprising:
a ball float, disposed on the interior of said cylindrical structure between said bottom wall and said one or more tabs, such that said ball float can move within the interior of said cylindrical structure between said bottom wall and said one or more tabs.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The lid assembly of claim 4 wherein said ball float is composed of polypropylene.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The lid assembly of claim 1 further comprising:
a filter cartridge, disposed in said cylindrical structure.

### Claim 7

The lid assembly wherein said filter cartridge comprises:
a cylindrical body having a first diameter smaller than the diameter of the top portion of said cylindrical structure of said lid;
a cap having a second diameter larger than the diameter of the top portion of said cylindrical structure; and
a tube, extending through said cap, allowing fluid communication between the interior of said filter cartridge and the exterior of said filter cartridge, for connection to a vacuum source.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The lid assembly of claim 7 wherein said cylindrical; body and said cap form a space therebetween for acceptance of the top portion of said cylindrical structure;

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The lid assembly of claim 8 wherein said filter cartridge is held on the top portion of said cylindrical structure by a friction fit.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The lid assembly of claim 8 where the cross sectional diameter of said cylindrical body is less than the diameter of said ball float.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The lid assembly of claim 7 wherein said filter cartridge is composed of a low density polyethylene.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The lid assembly of claim 7 further comprising a filter element, disposed in said cylindrical body, said filter element engaging said tube.

### Claim 13 (depends on 13)

The lid assembly of claim 13 wherein said filter element acts is composed of a material exhibiting hydrophilic or hygroscopic properties.

### Claim 14

A filter cartridge comprising:
a cylindrical body having a first diameter;
a cap disposed at one end of said cylindrical body, said cap having a second diameter larger than said first diameter, wherein said cap and said cylindrical body form a space therebetween; and
a tube, extending through said cap, allowing fluid communication between the interior of said filter cartridge and the exterior of said filter cartridge, for connection to a vacuum source.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The filter cartridge of claim 14 wherein said filter cartridge is composed of a low density polyethylene.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The filter cartridge of claim 14 further comprising a cylindrically-shaped filter element, disposed within said filter cartridge and engaging the end of said tube extending into the interior of said filter cartridge.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The filter cartridge of claim 16 wherein said filter element acts is composed of a material exhibiting hydrophilic or hygroscopic properties.

### Claim 18 (depends on 14)

The filter cartridge of claim 14 further comprising one of more longitudinal ridges defined on the interior wall of said cylindrical body for engaging a filter element inserted into the interior of said filter cartridge.

### Claim 19 (depends on 14)

The filter cartridge of claim 14, wherein the end of the cylindrical body opposite said cap is flexible.
