## Abstract

Described herein generally are surgical pencils which define a channel to enable suctioning of materials and methods of operating the surgical pencils. In one example embodiment, the surgical pencils perform cutting and coagulation. In one example embodiment, the surgical pencils include a lighting device.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-21. (canceled)

### Claim 22

A surgical pencil comprising:
a tip formed substantially of a metal and configured to perform one of cutting and coagulation, the surgical pencil having a housing including a channel through the housing, wherein the channel through the housing terminates near the tip which enables direct suctioning of a material at a surgery site, and wherein the tip is movable within the channel without disturbing suctioning of the material at the surgical site.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The surgical pencil of claim 22, wherein the material includes at least one of smoke, blood and tissue.

### Claim 24 (depends on 22)

The surgical pencil of claim 22, further including a lighting device.

### Claim 25 (depends on 22)

The surgical pencil of claim 22, wherein suctioning is not effected by movement of the tip between an extended state and a retracted state.

### Claim 26 (depends on 22)

The surgical pencil of claim 22, wherein suctioning is provided circumferentially around the tip.

### Claim 27

A surgical pencil comprising:
a processor;
an input device operatively connected to the processor;
a tip formed substantially of a metal operatively connected to the processor;
a housing including a channel through the housing, wherein the channel through the housing terminates near the tip which enables direct suctioning of materials at a surgical site and wherein the tip is movable within the channel without disturbing suctioning of material at the surgical site; and
a memory device storing instructions which when executed by the processor, cause the processor, in cooperation with the input device and the memory device, to enable the surgical pencil to operate as one of a cutting device and a coagulation device.

### Claim 28 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, which includes:
a cylinder portion configured to removably connect to a housing of the surgical pencil; and
a hose connector.

### Claim 29 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, wherein the tip is configured to be movable from a retracted position to an extended position.

### Claim 30 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, which includes a connector configured to connect to a separate discharge tube, the separate discharge tube being connected to a separate suction device.

### Claim 31 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, which includes a lighting device operatively coupled to the processor.

### Claim 32 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, wherein suctioning is not effected by movement of the tip between an extended state and a retracted state.

### Claim 33 (depends on 27)

The surgical pencil of claim 27, wherein suctioning is provided circumferentially around the tip.

### Claim 34

A method of operating a surgical pencil, the method comprising:
causing a processor to, in response to a selection of a first input device, enable a tip formed substantially of a metal to operate as a cutting device;
causing the processor to, in response to a selection of a second input device, enable the tip to operate as a coagulation device; and
causing a suction device to, using a channel defined by the surgical pencil, remove material, wherein suctioning is provided circumferentially around the tip.

### Claim 35 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, wherein the surgical pencil includes the suction device.

### Claim 36 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, wherein the material includes at least one of smoke, blood, and tissue.

### Claim 37 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, wherein the surgical pencil includes a light.

### Claim 38 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, wherein the channel is defined by a housing of the surgical pencil.

### Claim 39 (depends on 38)

The method of claim 38, wherein the surgical pencil includes:
a housing;
a cylinder portion configured to removably connect to the housing; and
a hose connector.

### Claim 40 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, which includes retracting the tip.

### Claim 41 (depends on 34)

The method of claim 34, which includes extending the tip.
