## Abstract

Low cost semiconductor manufacturing techniques have provided consumers with a wide range of electronic devices supporting communications according to multiple standards. These electronic devices will be deployed within many operational jurisdictions, particularly with roaming features, such as Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America and North America. However, operational compliance requirements can vary substantially with these different jurisdictions. Current electronic devices are designed, manufactured, calibrated and operated according to a specification providing compliance with broad range of operational jurisdictions despite the performance limitations this applies in many of the operational jurisdictions. Accordingly, there is provided a method of dynamically configuring the electronic device based upon a geographically based determination of the operational jurisdiction from global navigation systems data received by the electronic device. Based upon the determined operational jurisdiction, the operational parameters of a device's communication interfaces are adjusted for improving performance and efficiency of the device within these jurisdictions.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method to configure a wireless electronic device for jurisdiction compliance, the method comprising:
receiving a first location signal from a wireless receiver configured to periodically receive location signals indicative of a physical location of the wireless receiver;
determining an operational jurisdiction based on the first location signal; and
delaying processing of a second location signal received by the wireless receiver by an adjustable amount based on the physical location of the wireless receiver as indicated by the first location signal.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein delaying processing of the second location signal includes delaying a decision as to whether the operational jurisdiction has changed.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein delaying processing of the second location signal includes delaying a location determination.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising decreasing the adjustable amount when the physical location is close to a boundary between the operational jurisdictions.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising increasing the adjustable amount when the physical location is far from a boundary between the operational jurisdictions.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the wireless receiver includes a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising enabling, based on the operational jurisdiction, at least one of a first circuit configured to operate according to a first wireless standard and a second circuit configured to operate according to a second wireless standard.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 further comprising at least one of adjusting an output power of a transmitter, changing a driver circuit, changing a power amplifier circuit, and changing software data coding of the enabled circuit based on an operational requirement of the operational jurisdiction.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising retrieving from a look-up table the operational jurisdiction based on the physical location.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 further comprising retrieving from the look-up table at least one operational requirement based on the operational jurisdiction.

### Claim 11

A method comprising:
providing a first circuit supporting data communications according to a first communications standard, a second circuit supporting data communications according to a second communications standard, and a wireless receiver configured to periodically receive location signals indicative of a physical location of the wireless receiver;
receiving a first location signal from the wireless receiver;
enabling at least one of the first circuit and the second circuit based at least in part on the physical location as indicated by the first location signal; and
delaying processing of a second location signal received by the wireless receiver by an adjustable amount based on the physical location of the wireless receiver as indicated by the first location signal.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11 further comprising determining an operational jurisdiction based on the physical location as indicated by the first location signal, and enabling the at least one of the first circuit and the second circuit based at least in part on the operational jurisdiction.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11 further comprising decreasing the adjustable amount when the physical location is close to a boundary between the operational jurisdictions.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11 wherein delaying processing of the second location signal includes delaying a decision as to whether the operational jurisdiction has changed.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11 wherein delaying processing of the second location signal includes delaying a location determination.

### Claim 16

A wireless electronic device for jurisdiction compliance comprising:
a wireless receiver configured to periodically receive location signals indicative of a physical location of the wireless receiver;
a look-up table configured to determine an operational jurisdiction based on the physical location of the wireless receiver as indicated by a first location signal, at least one of a first circuit and a second circuit enabled based on the operational jurisdiction; and
an adjustable delay configured to delay processing of a second location signal from the wireless receiver by an adjustable amount based on the physical location of the wireless receiver as indicated by the first location signal.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The wireless electronic device of claim 16 further comprising the first circuit supporting data communications according to a first communications standard, and the second circuit supporting data communications according to a second communications standard.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The wireless electronic device of claim 16 wherein the adjustable amount decreases when the physical location is close to a boundary between the operational jurisdictions and the adjustable amount increases when the physical location is far from a boundary between the operational jurisdictions.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

The wireless electronic device of claim 16 wherein to delay processing of the second location signal includes at least one of to delay a decision as to whether the operational jurisdiction has changed and to delay a location determination.

### Claim 20 (depends on 16)

The wireless electronic device of claim 16 wherein the look-up table includes at least one operational requirement associated with the operational jurisdiction, and wherein operational parameters of the enabled circuit are automatically adjusted based on the at least one operational requirement of the operational jurisdiction.
