## Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of: treating an organic polymer with an electron beam-generated plasma; exposing the treated polymer to air or an oxygen- and hydrogen-containing gas, generating hydroxyl groups on the surface of the polymer; reacting the surface with an organosilane compound having a chloro, fluoro, or alkoxy group and a functional or reactive group that is less reactive with the surface than the chloro, fluoro, or alkoxy group; and covalently immobilizing a biomolecule to the functional or reactive group or a reaction product thereof.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An article make by a method comprising:
treating a microtitre plate comprising an organic polymer and comprising a plurality of wells with an electron beam-generated plasma;
exposing the treated polymer to air or an oxygen- and hydrogen-containing gas;
wherein the treating and exposing generates hydroxyl groups on the surface of the polymer;
reacting the surface with an organosilane compound having a chloro, fluoro, or alkoxy group and a functional or reactive group that is less reactive with the surface than the chloro, fluoro, or alkoxy group; and
covalently immobilizing a biomolecule to the functional or reactive group or a reaction product thereof.

### Claim 2

An article comprising:
a polymeric microtitre plate comprising a plurality of wells; and
two or more different organosilane compounds having a functional or reactive group and bound to the surfaces of the wells;
wherein at least two of the wells have different organosilane compounds bound therein.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The article of claim 2, wherein one or more biomolecules are covalently immobilized to the functional or reactive group or a reaction product thereof.

### Claim 4

An article comprising:
a polymeric microtitre plate comprising a plurality of wells; and
one or more organosilane compounds bound to the surfaces of the wells;
wherein the organosilane compounds in at least two different wells are each reacted with a different crosslinker.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The article of claim 4, wherein one or more biomolecules are covalently immobilized to the crosslinkers.

### Claim 6

A method comprising:
treating an organic polymer microtitre plate with an electron beam-generated plasma;
exposing the treated plate to air or an oxygen- and hydrogen-containing gas;
wherein the treating and exposing generates hydroxyl groups on the surface of the plate.
