## Abstract

An object of the present invention is to provide a means for conveniently producing ethanol with high efficiency from a carbon source derived from a plant biomass resource or the like. The present invention relates to a method for producing ethanol, comprising a step of generating ethanol by culturing basidiomycetes belonging to the genus Phlebia with a carbon source. As carbon sources, cellulose, hemicellulose, glucose, xylose, and the like or plant biomass resources containing the same can be used.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-8. (canceled)

### Claim 9

A method for producing ethanol, comprising:
a pretreatment step for culturing a basidiomycete belonging to the genus Phlebia with a carbon source under aerobic conditions; and
a fermentation step for further culturing the basidiomycete with the carbon source under semi-aerobic conditions or anaerobic conditions after the pretreatment step, so as to generate ethanol.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method according to claim 9, wherein the pretreatment step and the fermentation step are performed within the same reactor.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The method according to claim 9, wherein the basidiomycete belonging to the genus Phlebia is Phlebia sp. MKFC40001 (NITE BP-1099).

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The method according to claim 9, wherein the carbon source is a polysaccharide.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein the polysaccharide is in the form of a plant biomass material, crystalline cellulose, paper, pulp, or cotton linter.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The method according to claim 9, wherein the carbon source is at least one type of saccharides selected from the group consisting of glucose, xylose, mannose, galactose, fructose, and arabinose.

### Claim 15 (depends on 9)

An inoculum, which is used for the method of claim 9, comprising a basidiomycete belonging to the genus Phlebia, and a carrier supporting the basidiomycete.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The inoculum according to claim 15, wherein the basidiomycete belonging to the genus Phlebia is Phlebia sp. MKFC40001 (NITE BP-1099).
