## Abstract

The present invention concerns a monoclonal antibody and corresponding hybridoma cells and antigens suitable for isolating fetal cells from maternal blood. The inventive monoclonal antibody reacts with a surface antigen present on fetal red blood cells including their nucleated precursor cells, but not with surface antigens on adult erythroid cell.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

-16. (canceled)

### Claim 17

A method for detection or identification of fetal red blood cells in a sample comprising
labelling said fetal red blood cells and their nucleated precursor cells with an antibody; and
reacting the antibody with a surface antigen present on said fetal red blood cells and their nucleated precursor cells, but not with one or more surface antigens on adult erythroid cells.

### Claim 18 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, wherein the sample is maternal blood.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, further comprising analyzing said fetal red blood cells and their nucleated precursor cells, subsequent to the detection and identification, for a chromosomal or genetic defects.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, further comprising separating fetal red blood cells and their nucleated precursor cells binding the antibody by flow cytometry, solid phase separation, immunomagnetic bead separation, or panning on plastic surfaces.

### Claim 21 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, wherein the antibody has reactivity with fetal erythroid cells and their nucleated precursor cells which express the CD71 antigen but are negative for CD45 antigen expression.

### Claim 22 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, wherein the antibody does not react with CD71 antigen.
