Also disclosed is a processing method for such biometric devices, the method including the steps of: a) identifying said device by means of RF communication; b) extracting at least a portion of the biological material from the solid support of the identified device; c) analysing the extracted biological material to obtain biometric data indicative of the biological material; and d) writing said biometric data to the data storage of the biometric device.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A biometric information storage device, comprising a solid support for receiving biological material and for dry storing that material at room temperature, and for subsequent retrieval of said material from said support for obtaining biometric information relating to the material, wherein said support is selected from the group consisting of: a cellulose fibre based matrix, a chemically treated cellulose fibre based matrix, a nitrocellulose membrane, a chemically modified nitrocellulose membrane, nylon, PVDF, and any other polymer, the device further comprising a circuit providing two way radio frequency (RF) communication and providing writable data storage for storing said biometric information, and wherein the solid support includes a first area providing said dry storage, and a second area providing a support surface for said circuit.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The biometric device of claim 1, wherein said data storage is rewritable, such that the data can be added, removed, and/or overwritten.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The biometric device of claim 1, wherein said data storage stores biological data indicative of the composition of the biological material stored on the storage medium.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The biometric device of claim 1 wherein said data storage stores personal information relating to the provider of the biological material.

### Claim 5

(canceled)

### Claim 6

The biometric device of claim M, wherein said chemical treatment of the chemically treated cellulose fibre based matrix is the application of one or more of:
i) a weak alkali;
ii) a chelating agent;
iii) an anionic surfactant or detergent; and
iv) uric acid or a urate salt.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The biometric device of claim 1, wherein the solid support is folded at at least two discrete locations, to provide at least three areas separated by said folds namely: said first area, said second area, and a third area providing a cover for the first and/or second area.

### Claim at position 8

8-10. (canceled)

### Claim 11

A storage system for storing plurality of biometric devices each containing biological material, the system comprising:
a) bringing together a plurality of biometric devices, each device comprising: a solid support suitable for receiving biological material and for dry storing that material at room temperature the device further comprising a circuit including means for two way radio frequency (RF) communication and including writable data storage;
b) housing each device in spaced relation; and
c) identifying one or more of said housed devices by means of interrogating its associated circuit using RF communication.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The system of claim 11, wherein the identity of a plurality of devices is checked and the results are compared to a master record of said devices to verify that the correct devices are present.

### Claim 13

A method for the processing of a biometric device comprising a solid support suitable for receiving biological material and for dry storing that material at room temperature the device further comprising a circuit including means for two way radio frequency communication and including writable (for example rewritable) data storage, the method including the steps of:
a) identifying said device by means of RF communication;
b) extracting at least a portion of the biological material from the solid support of the identified device;
c) analyzing the extracted biological material to obtain biometric data indicative of the biological material; and
d) writing said biometric data to the data storage of the biometric device.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, further including the step of repeating steps a) to d) using either the same device or a different device and using either the same or different biological material.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of comparing the data obtained from the repeated steps.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of writing further data to the data storage including data representing personal information relating to the provider of the biological sample on the associated solid support.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein said extracting step includes nucleic acid amplification or protein detection.
