## Abstract

An electrolyte for a magnesium battery includes a magnesium salt having the formula MgBxHy where x=11−12 and y=11−12. The electrolyte also includes a solvent, the magnesium salt being dissolved in the solvent. Various solvents including aprotic solvents and molten salts such as ionic liquids may be utilized.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An electrolyte for a magnesium battery comprising:
a magnesium salt having the formula MgBxHy, where x=11−12 and y=11−12;
a solvent, the magnesium salt being dissolved in said solvent.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the solvent is an aprotic solvent.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The electrolyte of claim 2 wherein the aprotic solvent is selected from: tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethoxyethane (DME).

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the solvent is an ionic liquid.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the magnesium salt has a molarity of from 0.01 to 4 molar.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 further including a chelating agent.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 further including an acidic cation additive.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the magnesium salt includes MgB12H12.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the magnesium salt includes MgB11H11.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte of claim 1 wherein the magnesium salt includes a mixture of MgB12H12 and MgB11H11.

### Claim 11

A magnesium battery comprising:
a magnesium metal containing anode;
an electrolyte including a magnesium salt having the formula MgBxHy where x=11−12 and y=11−12, the magnesium salt being dissolved in said solvent;
a cathode;
wherein magnesium cations are reversibly stripped and deposited between the anode and cathode.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The magnesium battery of claim 11 wherein the solvent is an aprotic solvent.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The magnesium battery of claim 12 wherein the aprotic solvent is selected from: tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethoxyethane (DME).

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The magnesium battery of claim 11 wherein the solvent is an ionic liquid.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The magnesium battery of claim 11 wherein the magnesium salt has a molarity of from 0.01 to 4 molar.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The magnesium battery of claim 11 further including a chelating agent.

### Claim 17 (depends on 19)

The magnesium battery of claim 19 further including an acidic cation additive.

### Claim 18

A method of forming an electrolyte material for a magnesium battery comprising the steps of:
providing a borane material;
providing a magnesium borohydride material;
combining the borane and magnesium borohydride material forming a combined mixture;
adding an aprotic solvent to the combined mixture forming a combined solvent mixture;
heating the combined solvent mixture under reflux;
removing the aprotic solvent forming an electrolyte material.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18 including the step of filtering the electrolyte material including dissolving the electrolyte material in hot DMF followed by filtering.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18 where the borane material includes decaborane (B10H14).

### Claim 21 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18 where the magnesium borohydride material includes Mg(BH4)2.

### Claim 22 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18 where the aprotic solvent includes Diglyme (C6H14O3).
