## Abstract

A wine degassing apparatus 20 is mounted to the neck opening of a wine bottle and includes a gas separator rod 22 formed of cordierite or other suitable inert material with an exterior shape that causes nucleation of carbon dioxide from the wine. The gas separator rod is supported by a rod holder 23 having a mounting socket 35 at the upper end of the rod, and the mounting socket is inserted into the pump adapter plug 24 with air passages 40 formed between the mounting socket 35 and the plug so that the vacuum pump can pull gas from the bottle neck 18 up through the mounting socket 35 and pump adapter plug 24.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A wine degassing apparatus comprising:
a gas separation rod formed of cordierite, and having an irregular surface texture extending along the length of said rod,
a holder configured for supporting said gas separation rod, and
an adapter plug configured to suspend said holder and rectilinear gas separation rod into the wine of a wine bottle.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 1, wherein said irregular surface of said gas separation rod is a corrugated surface extending along the length of said rod.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 1, wherein said holder comprises
an elongated stem of a size and shape to extend along the length of said gas separation rod,
a mounting socket at one end of said stem shaped to mate with said adapter plug, and
a retaining socket at the other end of said stem for receiving the other end of said gas separation rod.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 3, wherein said mounting socket defines grooves that are shaped to extend into said adapter plug and pass air from the interior of a wine bottle through said adapter plug.

### Claim 5

A wine degassing apparatus comprising:
a gas separation rod,
a holder configured for supporting said gas separation rod, and
an adapter plug configured to suspend said holder and rectilinear gas separation rod into the wine of a wine bottle.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 5, wherein
said gas separation rod is formed of cordierite having an irregular surface for assisting the formation of gas bubbles at the surface of the rod in response to the reduction of pressure of wine about the rod.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 6, wherein said irregular surface of said gas separation rod is selected from the shapes consisting of: corrugations extending along the length of said gas separation rod, rings extending about said gas separation rod, and a granular surface.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 5, wherein said holder comprises an elongated stem of a size and shape to extend along the length of said gas separation rod,
a mounting socket at one end of said stem shaped to mate with said adapter plug,
a retaining socket at the other end of said stem for receiving the other end of said gas separation rod, and
said mounting socket defines grooves that are shaped to extend into said adapter plug and pass air from the interior of a wine bottle through said adapter plug.

### Claim 9 (depends on 5)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 5, and further including a vacuum pump for withdrawing gas from the wine bottle about said mounting socket and said adapter plug.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)

The wine degassing apparatus of claim 5, and wherein said gas separation rod is formed of cordierite.

### Claim 11

A process of degassing wine, comprising
inserting a solid item having an exterior surface formed of cordierite into a container partially filled with wine to a level below the surface of the wine in the container,
closing the container from the atmosphere,
applying sub-atmospheric pressure to the interior of the container, to the wine and to the solid item at a pressure to cause nucleation of carbon oxide in the wine at the exterior surface formed of cordierite of the item.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11, wherein the step of inserting a solid item having an exterior surface formed of cordierite into the wine comprises inserting a solid cordierite item having a shape selected from the group consisting of: solid rectilinear cylindrical shaft with a corrugated external surface, a granular external surface, and spherical corrugations, members attached in series on a connecting cord, and rounded solid shapes.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11, wherein said container includes a gas over the wine, and the step of applying a sub-atmospheric pressure comprises drawing the sub-atmospheric pressure in the gas over the wine.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11, wherein the step of inserting a solid item having an exterior surface formed of cordierite into a container partially filled with wine to a level below the surface of the wine in the container comprises
mounting a column of cordite with a corrugated surface in a holder,
mounting the holder in a plug,
extending the column of cordite and the holder through the opening of the container and into the wine in the container,
suspending the holder and the column of cordierite from the plug in the wine in the container, and
withdrawing gas in the container through the plug.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11 wherein said solid cordierite items are of small enough breadth to enter a wine bottle and of high enough density to sink in wine to the bottom of the interior of the bottle.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11 wherein the step of inserting solid inert items into a container comprises inserting solid inert items selected from the following shapes: spherical and elongated, with said solid inert items having a rough surface that induces gas to collect on the surface of said items.

### Claim 17 (depends on 11)

The process of claim 11, wherein the step of placing solid inert items in the container comprises inserting a plurality of one-half inch in breadth solid inert items in the container.

### Claim 18

A wine degassing element for use in a wine container, comprising a solid inert item of a size to move through the opening of a wine bottle, said solid inert item having a rough surface.
