## Abstract

Pet food palatability enhancers based on organic acids and showing antimicrobial efficacy are described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A palatability enhancer for dry pet food, comprising a composition of one or more organic acids selected from the group consisting of fumaric acid, citric acid, gallic acid, sorbic acid, succinic acid and tannic acid, applied at a rate that provides antimicrobial efficacy to the dry pet food while enhancing the palatability of the dry pet food.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said one or more organic acids at between 0.05% and 3.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The palatability enhancer of claim 2, wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said one or more organic acids at between 0.1% and 1.2% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The palatability enhancer of claim 3, wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said one or more organic acids at between 0.2% and 1.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is fumaric acid and wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said fumaric acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is succinic acid and wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said succinic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is gallic acid and wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said gallic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is sorbic acid and wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said sorbic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is citric acid and wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said citric acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is a combination of fumaric acid and succinic acid wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said fumaric acid and succinic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is a combination of fumaric acid and sorbic acid wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said fumaric acid and sorbic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is a combination of fumaric acid and gallic acid wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said fumaric acid and gallic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The palatability enhancer of claim 1, wherein said one or more organic acids is a combination of gallic acid and tannic acid wherein the composition is applied at a rate to provide said fumaric acid and tannic acid at between 0.1% and 2.0% by weight of the dry pet food.

### Claim 14

A palatability enhancer for dry cat food, comprising:
(a) pyrophosphate and, optionally, yeast and/or animal digest; and
(b) a composition of one or more organic acids selected from the group consisting of fumaric acid, citric acid, gallic acid, sorbic acid, succinic acid and tannic acid, applied at a rate that provides antimicrobial efficacy to the dry cat food while enhancing the palatability of the dry cat food.

### Claim 15

A method for preserving a dry pet food, comprising the step of applying a composition of one or more organic acids selected from the group consisting of fumaric acid, citric acid, gallic acid, sorbic acid, succinic acid and tannic acid, applied at a rate that preserves the dry pet food while not adversely affecting the palatability of the dry pet food.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein said dry pet food is a kibble and said composition is applied to the surface of the kibble.
