## Abstract

A catch basin retrofit that allows stormwater to be diverted from an existing storm sewer to an alternative stormwater management practice (SMP), while maintaining functionality of the catch basin as an overflow device for the alternative SMP.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A stormwater diversion and overflow device, the device comprising:
a grate assembly,
the grate assembly comprising a stormwater diversion element configured to divert stormwater runoff off a street through a curb inlet structure shared with an existing street-side catch basin to an alternative stormwater management practice system before the stormwater runoff enters the existing street-side catch basin,
the grate assembly defining an opening configured to pass stormwater runoff from the alternative stormwater management practice system to the existing street-side catch basin.

### Claim 2

(canceled)

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 1, wherein said stormwater diversion and overflow device is configured to be retrofitted to the existing street-side catch basin.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 1, wherein the grate assembly further comprises a grate and a cover portion, the cover portion comprising the stormwater diversion element.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 4, wherein said grate does not have a curbside lateral edge that would otherwise contact a curbside edge of a conventional frame assembly.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 4, wherein said grate comprises a curbside lateral edge, said curbside lateral edge having no edge that would be oriented vertically when the stormwater diversion and overflow device is installed at an existing street-side catch basin.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 4, wherein said grate assembly is configured to replace an existing grate structure over the existing street-side catch basin and wherein said irate assembly further comprises a horizontal member configured to pass, in the installed position over the existing street-side catch basin, flowing runoff water through the curb inlet and the stormwater diversion and overflow device to the existing catch basin beneath the cover portion.

### Claim 8

(canceled)

### Claim 9 (depends on 4)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 4, wherein the cover portion further comprises a plate.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 9, wherein the device further comprises a structural frame into which the grate assembly is configured to set.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 10, wherein the grate is in the structural frame, the plate is on the grate, and the plate extends slightly beyond the grate and the structural frame by an amount sufficient to carry the stormwater runoff to the stormwater management practice system.

### Claim 12 (depends on 4)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 4, wherein said grate further comprises grate slats, the grate slats being suitable to collect debris and allow stormwater runoff to pass through to the stormwater management practice system.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 10, wherein the cover plate is equipped with a drip edge to facilitate distribution of flow to the stormwater management practice.

### Claim 14

A stormwater diversion and overflow device, the device comprising:
a frame; and
a cover,
the cover set in the frame,
the cover extending beyond the frame on at least one side an amount sufficient to carry stormwater runoff to a stormwater management practice system.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 14, wherein the frame comprises an angle member having a first portion extending less than 360 degrees around a perimeter of the frame, defining an opening through which fluid can flow.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 15, wherein the first portion is aligned vertically when the frame is installed.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 16, wherein the angle member comprises a second portion, the second portion being aligned horizontally when the frame is installed, the second portion connected perpendicularly to the first portion.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 16, wherein the second portion extends 360 degrees around the perimeter of the frame.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 17, wherein the second portion comprises an extension on each of four sides of the perimeter of the frame, each extension being perpendicular to each adjacent extension.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 15, wherein the first portion extends on three sides of the perimeter of the frame, defining the opening on the fourth side of the perimeter of the frame.

### Claim 21 (depends on 14)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 14, wherein the cover at least partially defines an opening between the cover and the frame, the opening configured to allow stormwater to pass from the stormwater management practice system to a catch basin.

### Claim 22 (depends on 14)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 14, wherein the device further comprises a grate set in the frame adjacent to the cover, the grate further comprising:
a vertical portion comprising at least a portion of a perimeter of the grate; and
a plurality of parallel slats having a first end and a second end, the parallel slats extending from the vertical portion at the first end, at least one of the slats remaining free and unconnected at the second end.

### Claim 23 (depends on 14)

The stormwater diversion and overflow device of claim 14, wherein the grate comprises:
a vertical portion comprising at least a portion of a perimeter of the grate, the vertical portion defining an opening in the perimeter of the grate through which fluid can flow.

### Claim 24 (depends on 14)
