## Abstract

A liquid crystal display panel (100A) includes: a first substrate (2) and a second substrate (3), a liquid crystal layer (1) retained between the first substrate (2) and the second substrate (3), and plurality of pixels. The liquid crystal layer (1) has a first liquid crystal region (81) and a second liquid crystal region (82) provided outside the first liquid crystal region (81). The first liquid crystal region (81) is essentially composed of a nematic liquid crystal material alone, whereas the second liquid crystal region (82) has a plurality of liquid crystal subregions (11) containing a nematic liquid crystal material and polymer-containing walls (12) formed between adjacent ones of the plurality of liquid crystal subregions (11). The plurality of pixels include pixels accounting for the first liquid crystal region (81) and pixels accounting for the second liquid crystal region (82).

## Claims

### Claim 1

A liquid crystal display panel comprising: a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer retained between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of pixels, wherein the liquid crystal layer has a first liquid crystal region and a second liquid crystal region provided outside the first liquid crystal region;
the first liquid crystal region is composed essentially of a nematic liquid crystal material alone;
the second liquid crystal region has a plurality of liquid crystal subregions containing a nematic liquid crystal material and polymer-containing walls formed between adjacent ones of the plurality of liquid crystal subregions; and
the plurality of pixels include pixels accounting for the first liquid crystal region and pixels accounting for the second liquid crystal region.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 1, wherein, when viewed from a normal direction of the liquid crystal display panel, at least one outer side face of the second liquid crystal region is level with at least one of side faces of the first substrate and side faces of the second substrate.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 1, wherein a sealing portion is formed between at least one side face of the second liquid crystal region and at least one side face of the first substrate.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 1, wherein no sealing portion is formed between the first substrate and the second substrate.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 1, further comprising:
a first alignment film and a second alignment film formed between the first liquid crystal region and second liquid crystal region and the first substrate and second substrate so as to be in contact with the first liquid crystal region and the second liquid crystal region; and
polarizers respectively provided on sides of the first substrate and the second substrate opposite from the liquid crystal layer.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 5, wherein the liquid crystal display panel is a normally-black mode liquid crystal display panel.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 5, wherein the liquid crystal display panel is a normally-white mode liquid crystal display panel.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 5, wherein,
the nematic liquid crystal material has positive dielectric anisotropy;
at least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film is a horizontal alignment film;
the horizontal alignment film has been subjected to an alignment treatment; and,
in the first liquid crystal region and in the plurality of liquid crystal subregions, in the absence of applied voltage, an in-plane azimuth of liquid crystal molecules at an interface with the horizontal alignment film which has been subjected to an alignment treatment is parallel to an azimuth defined by the alignment treatment.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The liquid crystal display panel of claim 8 including two liquid crystal regions such that, in the absence of applied voltage, an azimuth of tilt of liquid crystal molecules at an interface with the first alignment film in the first liquid crystal region and in the plurality of liquid crystal subregions differs from an azimuth of tilt of liquid crystal molecules at an interface with the second alignment film in the first liquid crystal region and in the plurality of liquid crystal subregions.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)
