System and method of network diagnosis

A computer program product comprising one or more non-transitory computer readable media embodying computer executable instructions implementing a method for network diagnosis, comprising:

• sending a command to an infusion device to initiate infusing of control data by the infusion device;
• periodically sending commands to a drive of a media library over the network while the control data is being transferred at the drive to collect data generated by the drive;
• receiving responses to the commands from the drive, the responses specifying amounts of data;
• and
• determining a measure of network performance for a portion of the network between the infusion device and drive based on the responses from the drive.

A method for network diagnosis, comprising:

• at an infusion device coupled to a network, wherein there is a portion of the network between the infusion device and a drive of a media library coupled to the network, infusing control data into the network at an infused data transfer rate, wherein infusing control data into the network comprises sending commands to the drive to write corresponding data to the drive;
• and
• at a monitoring appliance coupled to the network:
• periodically sending commands to the drive over the network while the control data is being transferred at the drive to collect data generated by the drive;
• receiving responses to the commands from the drive, the responses specifying amounts of data;
• and
• determining a measure of network performance for the portion of the network between the infusion device and drive based on the responses from the drive.
