Abstract
Loading estimation of 3GPP networks. One or more metrics relating to a cell of a 3GPP network may be measured. Loading of the cell may be estimated based on the one or more metrics. The metrics may include metrics measured, estimated, or derived at multiple layers, possibly including one or more of physical layer, radio link control layer, radio resource control layer, or application layer metrics.
Claims20
A method for estimating loading of a cell in a cellular network by wireless user equipment (UE) device, the method comprising,:
- measuring or estimating two or more physical layer metrics, wherein the physical layer metrics comprise two or more of:
- total received power at the UE;
- pilot signal power of the cell;
- interference power;
- or
- noise power;
- performing one or more comparisons using the physical layer metrics and a predetermined threshold;
- estimating loading of the cell based on the one or more comparisons.
A non-transitory computer accessible memory medium comprising program instructions which, when executed at a wireless user equipment (UE) device, cause the UE device to implement a method for estimating loading of a cell in an LTE cellular network by a wireless user equipment (UE) device, comprising:
- measuring or estimating one or more upper layer metrics, wherein the upper layer metrics comprise one or more of:
- served percentage;
- uplink block error rate and uplink buffer size;
- radio link control (RLC) layer packet segmentation;
- packet round trip time (RTT);
- and
- estimating loading of the cell based on the one or more comparisons.
A wireless user equipment (UE) device, the UE comprising:
- a first radio frequency (RF) chain;
- a second RF chain;
- and
- one or more processing elements operatively coupled to the first and second RF chains;
- wherein the UE supports carrier aggregation utilizing the first and second RF chains, wherein the first and second RF chains and the one or more processing elements are configured to:
- utilize the first RF chain to measure one or more metrics relating to a first cell of a first cellular network, wherein the first cellular network operates according to LTE;
- utilize the second RF chain to measure one or more metrics relating to a second cell of a second cellular network, wherein the second cellular network operates according to UMTS,
- wherein the UE is configured to utilize the first RF chain to measure one or more metrics relating to the first cell and utilize the second RF chain to measure one or more metrics relating to the second cell concurrently;
- and
- estimate loading of the first cell and estimate loading of the second cell based on the measured metrics.
