Abstract
In a transformer core and transformer, a wound transformer core is formed from magnetic steel strips that are wound into multiple rings of different widths and arranged to define a ring-like structure having a stepped, substantially circular cross-section without any cuts or gaps in the magnetic path, or the core is wound from one or more tapered strips that are wound to define a cross-section that is circular, oval, egg-shaped, or square-shaped with truncated corners.
Claims26
A single phase core in which the core comprises a wound ring-like, cruciform structure, comprising
- at least three wound rings arranged co-axially on top of each other, wherein at least two of the rings are wound from different strip widths.
A method of making a transformer from a single phase wound core that includes at least three wound rings arranged co-axially on top of each other, wherein at least two of the rings are wound from different strip widths and the core is configured to define two legs, the method comprising
- winding transformer coils onto one or both of the core legs by means of one or more winding tubes.
A method of making a wound single phase core with substantially round cross-sectional legs, comprising
- forming a ring-like structure by winding a first or inner set of multiple layers of strip material of a pre-defined strip width, to define an inner ring of a pre-defined width and build,
- winding at least one middle set of multiple layers of strip material on top of the first or inner ring to define at least one middle ring, the at least one middle ring being wider than the inner ring, and
- winding an outer set of multiple layers of strip material on top of the at least one middle ring to define an outer ring, the outer ring being narrower than the middle ring.
A single phase core in which the core defines s a wound ring-like structure, comprising
- one or more wound rings wound from strip material having tapered sides along at least part of the length of the strip material, wherein the taper is chosen to define a substantially circular cross-sectional core when the one or more rings are arranged co-axially relative to each other.
