Abstract
A method and system for evaluating and sharing user-generated media files have been disclosed. The method and system is embodied in a contest/festival that entices visitors to return to the site to vote on their favorite videos by providing a plurality of phases in which the best performing media files are promoted based on voting scores. According to one embodiment, a computer implemented method comprises generating scores for each media file in four phases and calculating the total score for each of the four phases. The scores are calculated based on the number of views and votes from users for each media file. The votes are generated using questions, percentage of video viewed, comments, social distribution, and recommendations.

- calculating the media file's score based on a combination of voting results by users and the media file's user activity which comprises viewing tally;
- determining whether voting has reached stabilization for said media file;
- if voting has reached stabilization for said media file, determining whether the voting score exceeds a preset percentage and publishing the media file on a finalist page if the voting score exceeds a preset percentage;
- determining whether voting has reached maturation;
- sending notice to media owner if maturation is reached and setting a close time;
- determining whether close time has been reached;
- calculating the media file's final score based on a combination of the media file's viewing tally and voting results by users;
- and
- determining a winner by comparing the media file scores of all submissions and publishing the results on a winners page.
An apparatus for ranking media files in a list of media files displayed on a website based on scores comprising:
- a media acquisition module for obtaining a media file and storing said media file in a media database;
- the metadata acquisition module further obtaining metadata and associating said metadata with the media file;
- a media scoring module for determining the media file's score;
- and
- a POP processing module for determining whether the media file's score has reached stabilization and if voting has reached stabilization for said media file, determining whether the voting score exceeds a preset percentage and publishing the media file on a finalist page if the voting score exceeds a preset percentage, wherein the POP processing module further determines whether voting has reached maturation and sending notice to the media file owner and setting a close time if voting has reached maturation;
- wherein the media scoring module further determining the final score of the media file at the close time and communicates the results to the POP processing module in order to publish the media file to a winners page if the media file's score is a winning score.
A method of conducting a media contest comprising:
- accepting a media file submission;
- determining whether to publish a media file on a first page;
- calculating the media file's score based on a combination of the media file's viewing tally and voting results by users;
- promoting the media file to a first phase if the media file's score is sufficient;
- initiating the first phase of the contest;
- promoting the media file to a second phase if the media file's score is sufficient;
- ending the first phase of the contest;
- initiating the second phase of the contest;
- calculating the media file's final score based on a combination of the media file's viewing tally and voting results by users;
- and
- determining a winner by comparing the media file scores of all submissions and publishing the results on a winners page.
