System and method for handset operation in a wireless communication network

A method for the control of a wireless communication device in a wireless communication network using an application programming interface (API) wherein the wireless communication device comprises a short-range transceiver, the method comprising:

• the API causing the wireless communication device to automatically search for an access point using the short-range transceiver;
• automatically transmitting an authentication request to a detected access point, the authentication request including identification data associated with the wireless communication device;
• upon authentication of the authenticated wireless communication device, automatically establishing a communication link with the access point;
• automatically transmitting a signal from the authenticated wireless communication device to the access point using the short-range transceiver so long as the communication link with the access point is still established, the signal comprising user data;
• receiving targeted advertising data from the access point that is dependent on the user data;
• and
• automatically processing the targeted advertising data and displaying the targeted advertising data on a display of the authenticated wireless communication device without further intervention by the user.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium for the control of a wireless communication device in a short-range wireless communication network wherein the wireless communication device comprises a short-range transceiver, the computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, if executed by a computing device cause the computing device to:

• authenticate a wireless communication device associated with a user via one or more of a plurality of access points associated with a venue;
• upon authentication of the authenticated wireless communication device, establish a communication link between one or more of the plurality of access points and the authenticated wireless communication device;
• receive a signal comprising user data from the authenticated wireless communication device via one or more of the access points;
• receive user data over a data communication network from an infrastructure network database associated with the plurality of access points;
• receive user data from a subscriber network management data storage module;
• aggregate the received user data in a data storage module;
• cause the aggregated user data to be analyzed by a data analytics module to determine one or more user characteristics of the user;
• select targeted advertising data based on the determined one or more user characteristics;
• and
• deliver targeted advertising data to the authenticated wireless communication device from one or more of the access points via the communication link.

A system comprising:

• an authentication server configured to receive an authentication request from a wireless communication device and, in response to the authentication request, to verify an identity of the wireless communication device based on authentication data contained in the authentication request;
• a plurality of wireless access points associated with a first venue, the authentication server being configured to establish a communication link between the authenticated wireless communication device and one or more of the plurality of wireless access points such that the communication link is maintained so long as the authenticated wireless communication device is within range of at least one of the plurality of wireless access points;
• a subscriber management data storage module configured to store user data for a user of the authenticated wireless communication device;
• a database server configured to receive user data from the subscriber management data storage module, to receive user data from a data storage of the authenticated wireless communication device, and to receive user data from a infrastructure network data storage module associated with the plurality of wireless access points, the database server further configured to cause the aggregated user data to be analyzed by a data analytics module to determine one or more user characteristics of the user, to select targeted advertising data based on the determined one or more user characteristics, and to deliver targeted advertising data to the authenticated wireless communication device via the communication link.
