Abstract
Methods and devices for assessing, and treating patients having sympathetically mediated disease, involving augmented peripheral chemoreflex and heightened sympathetic tone by reducing chemosensor input to the nervous system via carotid body ablation.
Claims112
An endovascular catheter for ablating a carotid body, comprising:
- a shaft;
- a lateral emitting sonodome comprising one or more transducers configured to emit ultrasonic energy at tissue ablating levels in a lateral direction relative to the shaft.
A catheter for ablating a carotid body, comprising:
- a catheter shaft;
- a balloon mounted over a distal section of the shaft;
- and
- at least one ultrasonic transducer encompassed in the balloon, the at least one ultrasonic transducer configured to emit in a lateral direction relative to the shaft.
An ultrasound ablation catheter configured to ablate carotid septal tissue:
- the catheter comprising an ultrasound ablation transducer configured to directionally emit ultrasound ablation energy and a stabilizing device configured to stabilize the position of the ultrasound ablation transducer proximate a carotid body.
An ultrasound ablation catheter configured to be positioned in a jugular vein and configured to ablate carotid septal tissue,
- the catheter configured to be positioned in a jugular vein and comprising an ultrasound ablation transducer configured to directionally emit ultrasound ablation energy primarily towards a carotid septum and over a predetermined ablation depth to ablate septal tissue.
An ultrasound ablation catheter configured to ablate carotid septal tissue, comprising:
- the catheter comprising a diagnostic ultrasound transducer and an ablation treatment transducer, wherein the diagnostic and treatment transducers are disposed relative one another such that when the diagnostic transducer is aligned with one or more landmarks in the carotid vasculature, a directed energy emitting zone of the treatment transducer is oriented towards a carotid septum.
A method of carotid body ablation, comprising endovascularly positioning a distal region of a catheter proximate a carotid septum, the distal region comprising a directed ablation energy emitter;
- and ablating a carotid body by directing ablation energy from the directed ablation energy emitter into the carotid septum.
The method of 87 wherein the determining step comprises determining the location of at least an external carotid artery and an internal carotid artery.
The method of 87 wherein the determining step comprises determining the location of an external carotid artery and an internal carotid artery.
The method of 87 wherein the determining step comprises determining the location of a carotid bifurcation.
The method of 86 further comprising obtaining an indication of blood flow in at least one of an internal carotid artery, an external carotid artery, carotid bifurcation, and a common carotid artery using the emitted diagnostic energy and a received energy.
A method of carotid body ablation, comprising
- observing a characteristic of blood flow in at least one of an internal carotid artery, external carotid artery, carotid bifurcation, and common carotid artery;
- and
- ablating a carotid body or an associated nerve by endovascularly directing ablation energy into a carotid septum.
