Abstract
An apparatus and associated method provides a magnetic writing element that may have at least a write pole tuned to a predetermined first grain size with a cryogenic substrate temperature. A magnetic shield can be formed with a predetermined second grain size that is tuned with the cryogenic substrate temperature.

A data storage device comprising a write pole tuned to a predetermined grain size with a cryogenic substrate temperature.
An magnetic writing element comprising a write pole adjacent a magnetic shield, the write pole and magnetic shield formed with a cryogenic substrate temperature to provide first and second predetermined grain sizes.
A method comprising:
- tuning a substrate to a cryogenic substrate temperature;
- and
- depositing a write pole on the substrate, the write pole having a predetermined grain size corresponding with the cryogenic substrate temperature.
