Abstract
A method is provided for operating a volume-controlled internal-combustion engine having an intake tract and an exhaust system. An expansion machine is arranged in the intake tract in the flow direction of a combustion air in front of an inlet valve of the engine. An output shaft of the expansion machine is coupleable with an output shaft of the engine. A heat exchanger is arranged in the exhaust system. Before combustion air flows through the expansion machine, it is heated in the heat exchanger by exhaust gas of the internal-combustion engine. The method achieves an efficiency improvement in an internal-combustion engine with a volume-controlled load control at partial load.
Claims17
A method of operating a volume-controlled internal-combustion engine having an intake tract and an exhaust system, an expansion machine being arranged in the intake tract in a flow direction of combustion air upstream of an inlet valve of the internal-combustion engine, and an output shaft of the expansion machine being coupleable with an output shaft of the internal-combustion engine or a drive shaft of an electric machine, the method comprising the acts of:
- providing a heat exchanger in the exhaust system;
- heating the combustion air in the heat exchanger by an exhaust gas of the internal-combustion engine before flowing the combustion air through the expansion machine.
A volume-controlled internal-combustion engine, comprising:
- an intake tract;
- an exhaust system;
- an expansion machine operatively arranged in the intake tract in a flow direction of combustion air upstream from an inlet valve of the internal-combustion engine;
- an output shaft of the expansion machine operatively coupleable with an output shaft of the internal-combustion engine or with a drive shaft of an electric machine;
- a heat exchanger operatively arranged in the exhaust system, wherein
- exhaust gas of the internal-combustion engine is used in the heat exchanger to heat combustion air before said combustion air flows through the expansion machine.
