Abstract
An adjustable drill has a drill body having a face surface with a directional feature provided therewith. At least one cartridge is mounted adjacent the face surface and selectively slidable along the directional feature to provide adjustment. At least one insert is releasably affixed in an insert pocket provided in the cartridge. In further examples, the adjustable drill may have a central cutting system in combination with the adjustable cartridge type system, wherein the central cutting system may be modular. There may also be provided a modular type of holder arrangement to provide flexibility to adapt the system for various applications.
Claims20
An adjustable drill comprising:
- a drill body having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
- two top face surfaces comprising a drive feature;
- a longitudinal gullet extending from each face surface along at least a portion of the drill body;
- a cartridge mounted to each face surface, with at least one cartridge being movable relative to the face surface, each cartridge having a bottom surface cooperating with the drive feature on the face surface so the cartridge is driven therewith when mounted on the face surface;
- the cartridges including a cutting face comprising at least one insert pocket positioned adjacent the edge of the drill body and at least one cutting insert releasably affixed in the insert pocket, wherein the inserts are staggered relative to one another and together form a complete hole in a workpiece.
An adjustable drill comprising,
- a holder body having first and second face surfaces, each having a drive feature;
- a first cartridge and a second adjustable cartridge attachable to the first and second face surfaces, the adjustable cartridge being movable relative to the face surface, with each cartridge cooperating with the drive feature to be driven therewith;
- each cartridge having at least two insert pockets and a cutting insert attachable in the pockets, wherein the adjustable cartridge allows the diameter of the cutting inserts to be adjusted.
An adjustable drill comprising,
- a holder body having first and second face surfaces, each having a drive feature;
- a first cartridge and a second adjustable cartridge attachable to the first and second face surfaces, the adjustable cartridge being movable relative to the face surface, with each cartridge cooperating with the drive feature to be driven therewith;
- each cartridge having at least two insert pockets and a cutting insert attachable in the pockets, wherein the adjustable cartridge allows the diameter of the cutting inserts to be adjusted, and
- a central cutting system including at least first and second cutting edges disposed adjacent the rotational axis of the holder body.
